Why are you like this? this is the series about Generation Y that we have been waiting for for so many years! This series comes straight from Australia, created by ABC, and broadcast in 2018. Netflix bought the rights, to our delight! Series about millennials are everywhere: Riverdeal, On my block, Fate The Winx, … Yet Why are you like this is unlike any other! The synopsis of these creators, Naomi Higgins, Mark Bonanno and Humyara Mahbub sums up the series well: "three good friends in their twenties manage work, pleasure, identity politics and nights of madness in this incisive satire of young people's lives in Melbourne". In Why are you like this?, we follow three twenty-year-old Australians in Melbourne who ask themselves a multitude of questions as they have just returned to work. First of all, we have Mia, who struggles to keep a job for more than 2 hours. Then Penny, who throughout the series tries to get what she wants, while creating sometimes grotesque situations. Finally, Austin, a multifaceted drag queen, who does not lack ambition, but also problems. We follow the lives of these three best friends, with their problems, a lot of problems!
But what is Why are you like this really worth?
The "woke" universe under the tone of humor
Next to these congeners like the series The Bold Type or Dear White People, Why are you like this evokes the "woke" culture, culture that appeared now several years ago. Unlike the other series, this one evokes it under the prism of humor, even satire. Penny, Austin and Mia are all committed to advocating for various causes and values, but often it ends in absurd situations. Penny is a white woman trying to be as woke as possible, which often ends badly and becomes borderline aberration. Like when she wants to help employees underpaid by their boss, and provoke a feminist wind, but in reality, it will just fire them.
A colourful satire
If you like colorful series, Why are you like this is for you! From the credits, we can see that the series is colorful, we can already deduce that the series will make us see all the colors, and that we will suspect it through different emotions (SPOILER: yes!). The credits allow us to introduce the three protagonists, three totally different people. The credits are a mixture of the three, they all have peculiarities, and similarities. Austin is a mix of sweetness, creativity and extravagance. It is dressed in orange, with floral motifs. Penny's colors tend towards pink and red, a mixture of childhood, and passion, which is seen a lot during the progress of the series. Finally, Mia, dressed in yellow. Which means two things: his madness and his love for money (even when it's not his).
Hypocrisy, when you hold us!
The series highlights the hypocrisy that can be present in certain circles, and by certain people. This hypocrisy lies dormant in each of the three characters, despite their desire to act better. The protagonists are on the verge of being annoying, even problematic. However, the series remains interesting. It's hard not to find yourself in some discussions or questions, isn't it? We can see that the writers have done a lot of work on the reality of the series, so that the people who watch it feel involved. The discussions addressed in the series are multiple: we move from feminism, to cultural appropriation, but also to fast fashion, to bounce back on cancel culture. The series sounds rather right, but we can be disappointed by the ease and especially the easy caricature on these subjects, which become almost absurd. The tone of the series comes from the writers who are part of this generation Y, and who share the same concerns and questions as the characters. That's part of the charm of the show. The series has 6 episodes of about twenty minutes, as much to tell you that in 2 hours you have finished watching it, which can leave a void. Why are you like this is funny , cheeky, shocking, and totally awesome!
