Superstition is an American series released in 2017 on Netflix. This format of 12 episodes of 45 minutes invites us to discover the Hastings family who have been hunting hells for generations.
The Superstition series begins with Calvin Hastings returning to his family after a 16-year absence. He had left his family under strange circumstances when he was 18. He then finds his parents, Isaac and Bea, in the family funeral home. Calvin discovers upon his return that he has a daughter named Garvey. Garvey's mother is none other than May, his childhood sweetheart who is now Chief of Police. Tilly, the forensic pathologist who deals with bodies in funeral homes, completes this team.
This family has problems like all normal families. Only, they have magical powers and must use them against the infernals to protect humans.
Superstition is a series worn by Mario Van Peebles. The latter created the series, acts, directs and even co-writes some episodes. Mario plays Isaac Hastings, the patriarch of the family who is the descendant of the Templars and who has become immortal.
We immediately see the inspiration of series like Teen Wolf, Charmed and Six Feet Under. The magical universe is quite present from the beginning. The themes of the family and the prodigal son are also used. The authors do, however, bring enough novelties to make it pleasant to watch.
Indeed, Superstition uses the metaphor of post-traumatic stress in some episodes. Calvin is a soldier who suffered from war. We do not know exactly what happened to him during his 3 years in Afghanistan. However, some passages in some episodes are equivocal.
Superstition takes risks and thanks to them, we are progressing well in the series. For example, Isaac is accidentally killed by Calvin in the first episode. We then discover more about his past and the fact that he is immortal.
Indeed, the series offers a lot of action. The fight scenes are very well done. The choreographies set the tone for the events and remain believable. The use of light is very efficient. She is always beautiful and can also bring a plus to the telling of the story. Indeed, in episode 4, two different lights separate two opposite worlds. We also notice in episode 12 that the light symbolizes the prison in which the characters are trapped.
Each episode focuses on an event or the discovery of a family member. For example, Aunt Nancy or Uncle Bubba have their own dedicated episode. We discover their powers and part of their history. However, there is always a guideline. First, it's the enigma of the death of Arlo, Calvin's brother, and then it's the relationship between May and Calvin.
The sets are very beautiful. The artistic team did a very inspired job. It's really like being in Louisiana. The accessories are very beautiful and believable. They are often useful without making Chekov guns. These accessories make you want to know more about their powers and their stories.
Indeed, the universe looks rich and complex. We feel that he still has some under the elbow and in view of the infernals that we could observe in the last episode, there are still stories to clarify. However, you have to love this kind of series. Superstition is not really a very innovative series in the field. That said, if you want to dive back into stories of witches and demons, you might be sensitive to it!
The first season of Superstition managed to set the scene and build endearing and not stereotypical characters. Nostalgic for Charmed and Six Feet Under, go for it!
