With two seasons available on Netflix, and the last one that has just been ordered, the latest series of the brilliant Chuck Lorre, The Kominsky Method, is already establishing itself as a revolution in the television world.

A series that reinvents our vision of old age

Far from the usual image of the old man waiting for death, this series stands out as a true ode to old age. The Kominsky Method tells the story of two close friends of the fourth age living in Los Angeles, who discover the advantages and disadvantages of life after a certain age. If certain themes were previously avoided in the series, here, everything is shown while keeping a benevolence towards the characters. This series is not afraid to stage the 70-year-old main character as much fetching Viagra in his car as showing it at the urologist. Here, everything is addressed: illness, food intolerances, the gap between the world during their childhood and the modern world, and all this punctuated by ironic punchlines and existential questions. We can see here not two old men advancing towards death but two men continuing their lives despite the difficulties that accumulate and it is this look that changes everything. The characters played by Michael Douglas (Basic Instinct, Ant-Man) and Alan Arkin (Fargo, Little Miss Sunshine) display a flawless complicity and their compatibility is one of life's strong points. One, a passionate actor and the other, a cynical agent. One is an exciting acting coach, the other an agent one foot in the business, one foot retired. This series marks a new era, an era where people over 65 are finally represented on television and their daily lives are neither fantasized nor aggravated. A series that wants to be realistic and not fatalistic

Even if the themes are serious and can be painful, the Kominsky method tries to show both the serious and the anecdotal, death and grief as much as the fact of not being able to eat chips than the drugs to take if one has done it anyway. A special mention should be awarded just for the funeral scene where burlesque allows us to distance the anguish of death by a complete shift from our habits. By displaying no taboos, this series manages to break them. Indeed, far from showing old age as an antechamber of death, it is another stage of life.

A successful mise en abyme

Through the courses given by Kominsky, character played by Michael Douglas, here, it is about real lessons about life, which are given. Indeed, the acting classes they give to these future actors highlight the thought of the character, these states of mind, these doubts, these fears … By trying to share his experience as an actor and his wisdom as a man, he allows us to know the thought of a man, who refuses to talk about feelings. Two award-winning seasons and one final season, which will be final

If the third season will be the last, it would not be for lack of success but by artistic will. Indeed, this series has had a great success both critically and commercially. She has garnered 13 nominations and 2 awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Michael Douglas and the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series. Among the nominations, we can find those of the Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor or Best Comedy Series.   This series is a reminder of the reality necessary vis-à-vis a society centered on youth. In the space of a few episodes, it decomplexes and reassures on all the fears and anxieties that one could have on the old age while remaining ultra realistic on it.
