Review "Jessica Jones" season 2: an honorable return if not transcendent

After a relatively successful first season, Netflix ordered season 2. Jessica Jones is back, having helped her friends in The Defenders. This time, she returns to her origins by discovering the existence of her real mother. It is an acceptance of itself in line with the first season.

A less impactful antagonist

The great strength of the first season is obviously the antagonist. With The Cheath of the first season of Daredevil, Killgrave was undoubtedly the best nemesis of the Marvel/Netflix series. Played by David Tennant (Doctor Who), Killgrave was a delightful blend of class, wisdom and madness. A perfect enemy, which may become cult and that we find with immense joy the time of a gripping episode (probably the best of the season). Too bad his return is not more exploited.

This time, Jessica Jones is dealing with her own mother, relatively crazy, ultra violent and totally irresponsible. Janet McTeer is not necessarily stunning in the role and fails to infuse the ambiguity necessary to make her a truly transcendent character. The character is therefore relatively cliché and not necessarily exciting. This plot about how Jessica Jones gets her powers is relatively worn out. More genetic manipulation, more memory loss, we are beginning to know… Especially since in the comics it is an exposure to chemicals that gives him his powers (not really original either). In short, Jessica Jones has certainly not lost her outspokenness and leaves more room for her companions, but the story does not fly very high. Remains an appreciable aesthetic, action scenes rather rare but relatively well directed and endearing characters.

Jessica Jones : some beautiful references to the Marvel universe

There are obviously some connections to the Marvel Universe, whether it's the Marvel Cinematic Universe or directly the comics. Starting with Whizzard, finally a new character who makes his entrance. We hoped for more appearances of the same kind but we will have to be satisfied with this character a little offbeat and not really essential that will not last long. References to the MCU are relatively low-key. The Raft is also introduced in the comics, which makes a direct connection with the movies. This maximum security prison is introduced in Captain America: Civil War, in which the Captain's supporters are locked up, before being released by the latter.

In a more discreet way, for comic book lovers, Trish finally reveals herself slightly in Hellcat. She seeks to obtain superpowers like Jessica Jones. She seems to be succeeding at the end of the season. In the comics, this character is an excellent fighter who has the ability to see demons at first glance, a very light telepathy and a particular sensitivity to psychic phenomena. What to leave some clues for the potential season 3? We will also regret that none of the Defenders come to say hello to their colleague and that this season does not really have strong moments.

Finally, this season 2 is in the direct line of the first, the element of surprise less. Effective if not original, this new vintage does not dishonor but does not necessarily captivate either.
