A few years ago, when we talked about adult cartoons, our minds immediately thought of a genre that could undoubtedly be described as special. But times are changing: welcome to the not-so-distant world of Big Mouth, which will no doubt revive in discerning viewers a hint of nostalgia (imbued, no doubt, with an ounce of embarrassment).

There's Rick & Morty, and there are the ones we don't talk about. Big Mouth is part of this new generation of series whose young writers have been drugged to the humorous tone of The Simpsons and American Dad.Except that the new generation is much more uninhibited than its spiritual parents.

The monster in the closet

A must for any child looking for himself, puberty is nevertheless a taboo moment. Intended for an informed audience, the animated series Big Mouth follows the daily lives of young teenagers in the throes of puberty. Helped by the Monster Hormone, which perverts those who were recently children, they will gradually discover adulthood through their sexuality and life in society. We follow the relationship between Andrew, who is experiencing his first hours of puberty, and Nick, who worries about not experiencing these changes. On the feminine side, we follow Jessi and Missy, who discover femininity. Through humor, are addressed many topics that we do not necessarily dare to talk about at this age. It's hard, as an adult, not to identify with it.

Big Mouth will spare you nothing: first love, first kiss, first period, homosexuality, family problems or masturbation punctuate the episodes, as the protagonists discover adulthood. Embarrassing, for sure, the animated series plays taboos, has fun with them, to better denounce them. And yet, in a society where differences seem to be more and more accepted, it is interesting to see that this series provokes discomfort as it addresses the subjects directly.Watching the series, it seems hard not to draw a parallel with the experience of any adult person.Unlike sex education classes in secondary education, even if they are necessary, the series says what is and not what should be. It does not water down a reality shared by all teenagers to make it more acceptable.
This is the strength of Big Mouth, under its cartoon name and under its fat jokes, the series is definitely mature. And precisely, it is interesting to see that only this format makes it possible to convey this type of message and to set up this kind of scenarios.

Don't be fooled by the childish aspect of the drawings: Big Mouth is indeed an adult series. Playing with puberty, she deconstructs the taboos that surround her. Note the excellent choice of music that accompanies the sound environment of the series.
