The Bulgarian-born artist, known for his monumental ephemeral works such as the packaging of the Pont-Neuf and the Reichstag, died at his home in New York on Sunday, May 31. He appears to have died of natural causes. His collaborators announced it on his official Facebook account. The visual artist was recognized for his monumental achievements with his partner Jeanne-Claude who died in November 2009. The latter formed one of the most publicized couples in contemporary art that they marked by their in situ works. Their achievements require years of design and millions of dollars to last only a few days. He is at the origin of a new artistic genre, the "new interlining". These two best-known achievements are the fabric packaging of the Pont-Neuf in Paris (1985) and the Reichstag in Berlin (1995). He is also behind the installation of floating platforms, entitled The Floating Piers, on Lake Iseo in Italy.
Christo: an exhibition is planned this summer at the Centre Georges-Pompidou
An exhibition devoted to the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude is scheduled from July 1st to October 19th at the Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris. According to the collaborators of the deceased, his next project in Paris should see the light of day.
"Christo and Jeanne-Claude have always made it clear that their works of art in progress continue after their deaths. […] The Arc de Triomphe, wrapped in Paris, France, is still on track for September 18 to October 3, 2021," they wrote on Facebook.
Multiple tributes were made to the announcement of Christo's death. Among them, the Minister of Culture Franck Riester or Serge Lasvignes president of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The latter said Christo was an "enchanter, he was also a magnificent person combining audacity, determination and a deep humanity".
