How far can technology go? Since May 15, and until September 9, 2018, the installations of the Japanese collective teamLab have invaded the Grande Halle de la Villette. With their exhibition Beyond the limits, they offer you an interactive journey into the digital world.
If we told you that the 500 computers and projectors deployed on 2,000 m2 could make you travel in the heart of nature, would you believe us? Yet this is the feat that the teamLab collective achieved during the Japonisme 2018 season!
A collaborative collaboration between artists, developers, engineers, 3D animators, mathematicians and architects, Beyond the Limits immerses you in a parallel 360° universe.
A world of creativity
If they are at the origin of the exhibition, teamLab nevertheless encourages visitors to participate ! The collective invites you to start your journey by bringing your imagination to life.
To do this, the principle is simple: you just have to choose from a wide range of models (ranging from flowers, to crocodiles, then lizards, through birds to butterflies to finally decide on a whale), draw them to your image, and scan them. You will then be able to observe your creation being digitized on the walls!
These "nature graffiti" will then be integrated into an already existing virtual ecosystem, for an (almost) natural visual spectacle.
Interacting with technology
The objective of this exhibition is therefore to create a link between the works and the visitors. As they move in the dark, they will transform digital creations and become "the actors of their own experience".
For example: on a wall, a school of fish is projected there. In contact with your hand, these little digital beings will perceive your presence and thus avoid you, creating trails and swirls of colors.
On another surface, the flowers scatter, lose their petals and even wilt after your passage. And if, on the contrary, you remain motionless, they will multiply.
Even more impressive: the large 11-metre-high waterfall just a few steps away. Like a rock, your presence will deflect the trajectory of the water that then flowed to your feet.
Journey of the senses
But finally, in addition to these facilities dedicated to interactions, Beyond the limits simply offers you to travel. Always thanks to technologies, teamLab invites you to use your senses.
Lose yourself in the contemplation of animations projected on mirrors. It is to no longer know or! Dance to the rhythm with these characters in traditional clothes. Observe the evolution cycle of trees and flowers. See how the landscapes change to the rhythm of certain melodies…
In all, 5 colourful installations make you see the world of fauna and flora from a whole new angle. Come and (re)discover the cycle of life through fun and original experiences!
