You are one of the many people who discovered the Umbrella Academy through the TV series and the character of Klaus probably touched you. This skinned alive is one of the most touching characters but also the unbearable of the series. He hides his sadness under laughter and mountains of drugs. A flashback reveals the traumatic learning he has undergone since childhood in the academy. We find the principal as cold as a CEO. Klaus no longer has a name but his mentor refers to him as number 4. His adoptive father shows no compassion but pushes him beyond his limits to reveal his talent for seeing the dead. Alas, this power is a curse. It no longer differentiates between dead and living and therefore life loses its interest. Depressed to the highest point, he is unable to open up to others and prefers to flee in self-destruction. Within the Umbrella Academy, he becomes embarrassing for him because, because of his drug addiction, he no longer has any motivation and falls into delinquency but also for others because the specters do not cease to disturb the courses. He is therefore pushed out at the beginning of this volume. Its very refined features and the exaggeration of the forms evoke the cartoons of the sixties and seventies. The warm colors form a counterpoint to the sometimes sad subject. Indeed, You Stink of Death reveals an ignored part of the Umbrella Academy, the period following Klaus' dismissal from the academy. However, Klaus refuses to leave and must be vigorously kicked out. He then heads to Los Angeles to find his drug which seems easy in this world because there is a shop in the style of a diner. The scenario is initially erratic illustrating the wandering of a drug addict. One can even wonder if Klaus does not represent the past life of the screenwriter and rock singer. Gerard Way and Shaun Simon expand the universe of the Umbrella Academy by revealing a secret world of vampires including monkeys. Mr. Frisson runs the drug trade and there are different groups of vampires from the coolest Californians to the most rigid and Germanic. Lacking money, Klaus finds himself by chance in the world of cinema in Hollywood. His power becomes a gift because by copying the talents of specters of actors or singers. The drug addict turns out to be a public entertainer. More than stars, Klaw meets gods and demons like Vivian Clarke old-fashioned actress who refuses to accept him. Through her, Klaus, Klaus is addicted to heroin and continues to be used and abused. Following an overdose, he discovers an empty universe between heaven and hell and wants to return. The narrative becomes more and more delusional even without drugs. First spin-off of the Umbrella Academy, You Stink of Death inaugurates the series of "archives of the academy" with a complete story very successful.
