El diablo and Romain Baudy returns to tell us about the future of humanity in the second volume of Space Connexion. The least we can say is that we will not be bored in these science fiction short stories. Follow us to find out how everything will fall apart. An anthology of trouble for humanity or aliens. The principle of this second volume of Space Connexion remains identical to the first volume : to tell in short stories the encounter between humanity and extraterrestrials. The screenwriter Eldiablo offers us again very varied proposals. If the cover of the first chapter, Alien traficant, evokes the film The wages of fear, it is absolutely not a coincidence as the inspiration is obvious but with drugs and aliens. We are also on the side of the bad guys. A group of three small Latin strikes is late to deliver the powder to their godfather El Tiburon. Their crossing the jungle is more complicated than expected. They begin to worry especially that the forest is watching them. Indeed, this first short story of Space Connexion distills an oppressive atmosphere as in Predator. With the lush vegetation and the night, the mobsters do not see anything coming but feel that something is wrong. With their big guns, they thought they were hunters they turn out to be prey. Indeed, aliens are down and looking for help. How will the mafiosi apprehend this Encounter of the Third Kind? With Roadkill, the second chapter of Space Connexion , the reader then travels several thousand miles north into the vast, sparsely populated countryside of the United States. In a decrepit farm, we discover a family of rednecks accustomed to the harshness of everyday life. The father is a massive, violent and heartless brute who hits his overly sensitive and possibly completely idiotic son. Yet it is the youngest who will meet the extraterrestrial. In the third novella, we discover a whistleblower but from the future. This time traveler comes to the past to warn a friend of an alien threat. Indeed, if the environment is ravaged and the world is at nuclear war in 2078, it is not our fault. However, the traveler would have benefited from better preparing his trip…
Several stories but the same vision
As the previous summaries show, the different short stories in the second volume of Space Connexion are very different in the geographical setting and the characters. However, several links can be identified. First of all, humor is always present even if the conclusion of the news can be sinister. Then, the authors of Space Connexion play with the expectations of the reader. We expect the violence of the aliens because it is like that in most movies. Spielberg is also quoted in a dialogue. However, in several short stories, the real monsters are on Earth. The narrative is often based on dualities, for example between violence and pacifism. The link is finally provided by the cartoonist Romain Baudy. Its aliens often look like insects. In Alien Traficante, they are giant, pink praying mantises. The aliens' dwellings in the third chapter of Space Connexion are modernized mushrooms. We can see as a bonus his research on the characters. Baudy's style is still pleasing to the eye. It has a modern feel with slightly caricatured faces evoking tag. The decorations are certainly simple but precise and set the mood with accuracy. The layout uses the classic Franco-Belgian framing: small boxes and fairly small characters in large settings. But Baudy also offers us splendid double pages such as the effects of drugs on the first chapter. His style is well highlighted by the bright and even fluorescent colors of Studio Arancia. In this sequel to Space Connexion, at Glénat, humanity still shows as much mediocrity in the face of cosmic issues. Everything does not end badly but the moral is each time exploded with laughter by the absurd situations of Eldiablo and the very successful drawings of Romain Baudy. Failing to cross aliens, you can find on the site the chronicle of the first volume and We Only Find Them When They're dead, another science fiction series.
