On Sunday, March 18, publisher Thierry Mornet and cartoonist Lorenzo de Felici presented Oblivion Song, the latest comic book series created by Robert Kirkman. During this meeting at the Paris Book Fair, Lorenzo de Felici unveiled the backstage of this new project.
The name Robert Kirkman may not ring a bell. Yet you know his most famous creation: The Walking Dead. Since 2003, the American author has sold more than 50 million copies of his post-apocalyptic series, in 30 different languages. Not to mention, of course, the adaptation into a television series. Thus, when the comic book author presents an untold story, the public expects a new phenomenon. On Sunday, March 18, the cartoonist Lorenzo de Felici introduced the fruit of their collaboration to the readers of the Book Fair. Oblivion Song is a science fiction series. Ten years ago, 300,000 residents of the city of Philadelphia disappeared in an instant. A block of the city was exchanged with a block of another dimension, called Oblivion. During this decade, the army and the municipality did their best to find the inhabitants who had vanished into the other dimension. However, hopes and means are quickly running out. The military must also fight against the gigantic monsters that have materialized in their world. A decade later, only Nathan Cole is still trying to find human survivors in the Oblivion dimension. A personal quest and mysteries to solve, that's what awaits you in the new series by Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo de Felici.
A promising collaboration
Lorenzo de Felici is an Italian cartoonist and colorist. In 2015, when the cartoonist began working on Infinity 8 (Lewis Trondheim) he received an email from Robert Kirkman. The American author offers him to be the co-creator of his new series. Lorenzo de Felici did not expect such a proposal and quickly accepted."I've always read his comics. Just working with him is exciting. What I like most is not the battle scenes or the monster-populated universes but the way his characters evolve. In Oblivion Song, however, the Italian cartoonist spent a lot of time creating this monstrous dimension. Lorenzo de Felici has set up a dimension filled with jungles, desert spaces and dangerous creatures. Colorist Annalisa Leoni created a strong contrast between the two dimensions by giving each one very particular colors. This new universe could well grab you too and not let you go again.
The Walking Dead series has 29 volumes and does not provide an end. According to Lorenzo de Felici, the world of Oblivion is different. Oblivion Song is moving very fast, there is a lot of energy and evolution. Volume 2 is already in preparation and could be released in early 2019 in the worst-case scenario. On the other hand, the first volume was released on March 7, 2018, six months before the publication of the full album in the United States. Take advantage of this advance to devour Oblivion Song and taunt readers across the Atlantic!
