On May 3rd, the jury of the prestigious Prix Goncourt, chaired by Bernard Pivot, decided to reward the singer Raphaël Haroche, whom the public had discovered in 2003 with the title "Sur la route" in duet with Jean-Louis Aubert.
We told you about it at the book fair; Raphaël published Retour à la mer on February 9th with Gallimard. Double blow for Gallimard therefore, by signing both the last Goncourt 2016, Leïla Slimani and her Sweet Song ; and the singer's first work; which is now crowned. Yet eight times rewarded by this prize, Gallimard had not received it since 2009.
Goncourt of the short story
Return to the Sea consists of thirteen short stories that feature abused but deeply human beings. A Berber vigilante in concert halls, living a love affair with an aging stripper; a schoolboy stalked by a child who looks suspiciously like him; Three teenagers who witness the crash of an airliner…
"You don't make the news down, but (…) the news to abrasion", greeted Didier Decoin, member of the jury, evoking a "writing like a violin string" and "a poignant first work, sometimes heartbreaking".
