Since the end of the lockdown, everyone has set goals: to be friendly… And why not save the world? Before embarking on this mission, prepare yourself by reading UN3 released by Bliss edition.

A personal project

Emergency Level 3 is a separate project. This is not a Valiant publication but a more personal project of the publisher. Initially, it was an online publication for the World Food Programme by screenwriter Joshua Dysart. This fictional narrative is based on interviews he conducted in the field between 2014 and 2016. He has indeed been a humanitarian for WFP to publicize its work. We therefore find his two stories on Iraq and South Sudan. They are designed by Alberto Ponticelli. Bliss offers us a new chapter on Chad written by Jonathan Dumont, head of the multimedia department of WFP (World Food Programme). Pat Mansioni goes from colorist to cartoonist for the latter story. un3 critique urgence niveau 3 comics utilite publique Bliss "UN3" review: disturbing dive into the lives of humanitarians

In Iraq

Like a novice, we follow Leila Helal, a humanitarian during her first mission and an Iraqi father who fled when Daesh arrived. The father of the family remains very factual and avoids sentimentalism – even when he talks about the abduction of his granddaughter and his big son by Daesh. We realize that the mission of the Food Program is not only to bring food but that a real administration manages a set of actions. Each page is organized around large boxes and the organization remains classic as if modesty were in order. Alberto Ponticelli made the strong choice to scribble the faces of the Islamists and their flags. It is a narrative of war but experienced by civilian victims.

In South Sudan

Despite the differences, there is a link between the chapters by Food Program staff. The reader follows an action not on a country at war but during a drought. The narrative initially separates humanitarians and victims, then the two come together. After the independence of this country, a family of patriots was forced to flee to Sudan. Back in the United States, Leila finds her artificial house and is happy to go back to the field. At the end of the chapter, Leila has changed – she allows herself to have a personal and more enjoyable life than these refugees. Everything happens on the ground but the outside world is constantly evoked – communication with WFP central bodies, the need to communicate to obtain donations, the appeal to donor countries. un3 critique urgence niveau 3 comics utilite publique Bliss "UN3" review: disturbing dive into the lives of humanitarians

An unprecedented: Chad

This chapter tells us about the trauma of Evan Thomas – the asocial humanitarian of the previous adventures – and explains how he became so wild. Through a kidnapping, he will discover what the refugees were experiencing. From a humanitarian point of view, we understand the complexity of transporting food with robbery. UN3 was an online comic strip intended to publicize the action of humanitarians but it is also a strong story with a strong emotional charge through the testimony of refugees.
