Thorgal, a famous Belgian comic book series of heroic fantasy set against a backdrop of Scandinavian mythology, began publication in 1977. Optional for years, the comic will finally know the joys of a television series adaptation.

couv_401Thorgal began its publication in 1977 by Éditions du Lombard. Created by Jean Van Hamme on the script and Grzegorz Rosinski on the drawing, it now has 35 albums! Even if since 2007, the series is scripted by Yves Sente following Van Hamme's decision to stop, then since 2014 by Xavier Dorison.

The history of the comic strip takes place about thirty years before the year one thousand. Caught in a storm at sea, a Viking expedition discovers a baby in a mysterious boat (which turns out to be a space capsule). The Viking chief, Leif Haraldson, adopted the child and named him Thorgal Aegirsson. They think that it is the son of Ægir, the god of the seas, sent by Thor, the god of lightning. As an adult, Thorgal became a formidable warrior with exceptional archery skills but did not inherit the love of combat and violence of the Viking people. Aspiring to a quiet life, Thorgal and Aaricia decide to leave the Viking people to live away from the cruelty of men, but the many dangers of the world seem to catch up with them every time.Mandatory Credit: Photo by AGF s.r.l./REX/Shutterstock (1260708v) Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck 'The Tourist' film premiere, Rome, Italy - 15 Dec 2010

German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, winner of an Oscar in Hollywood for the film The Lives of Others in 2006, has just announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair that he has just acquired the rights to the comic strip.

A real Arlesian that this adaptation that we have been talking about for a few years now!

Laurent Duvault, Director of International and Audiovisual Development at Media Participations announced that in partnership with Pergamon Films, a German production company, a TV series would be released, with live actors.

The perfect opportunity to create maybe a new Game of Thrones? Thorgal is indeed perceived in the United States as a great epic saga that has nothing to envy to its American cousin!

In any case, we can't wait to discover this very special universe staged live! We hope to shoot in 2017 for broadcast the following year, but we do not yet know the channel that will inherit this nugget!
