A study presented by SuperData and PayPal highlights spending and consumption trends in the eDport industry. The Nordic countries are still in the lead.

No Germany, no England, it is indeed the French public that presents itself on the podium. In addition, the agency estimates the continental eSports market at more than 300 million euros for the year 2018. The France represents a share of 20 million euros. It will come as no surprise but the 90-2000 generation represents 62% of eSports players.

A continent catching up with its rivals

Historically, East Asia is the region of the world where the practice of eSports is the most developed. Because the number of users is higher. But today, Europe is clearly catching up in this sector. The eSports industry is indeed booming in Europe. This popularity is explained in particular by wide access to the internet and social networks.Three countries, however, stand out from their European neighbors: Sweden, with revenues estimated at more than $49 million .Russia with more than $ 40 million in revenue and France, market estimated at more than $ 24 million in 2018.

The France occupies a good place but progresses slowly

Since 2016, we have seen that France ranks well in the eSports market, with revenues constantly evolving: $ 22.4 million in 2016, $ 23.5 million in 2017 and this amount is expected to reach $ 24.7 million in 2018. These encouraging results make France one of the main players in this market.

Esports, a real cultural phenomenon among millennials

In the entire European market, only 10% of eSports fans are over 45 years old.The digital game industry is almost entirely owned by millennials. The two age groups most interested in eSports are the 18-24 and 25-34 age groups. The profile of eSports viewers is mostly represented by the male gender. In Europe, it attracts 84% of spectators against 16% of female spectators. The study shows us that the same is true for French viewers, who are as eager for eSports as their neighbors across the Atlantic. The share of millennials in France who consume eSports is 57%. In 2016, the eSports audience represented more than 1.4 million unique viewers, a figure that would peak at 1.6 million in 2017. For example, this figure corresponds to the audience of very popular "prime time" access shows in France such as Quotidien on TMC2. An honorable figure for this new entertainment.
