The history of Philip II

The Venerable Philip II was for 48 years, the one who ruled the great Spanish Empire and was one of the most powerful European monarchs of the sixteenth century. A great defender of the Catholic faith, he was at the origin of many religious conflicts: he created a "Holy League" to fight the Ottomans and routed them in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.

He later became an opponent of Protestantism in England and tried several times to invade the country with his famous fleet "Grande y Felicísima Armada", the Invincible Armada. Between 1585 and 1595, he financed the Catholic League and played a major role in the advent of Catholicism as the main religion of France. The reign of Philip II represented an unparalleled golden age for Spain. The culture flourished fully despite the wars and reached its apotheosis with the construction of the royal site of El Escorial, where the king died in 1598.

Philip II's impact in Civilization VI

With Spain, players will benefit from the special skill: Fleet of the Indies. Trade routes linking Spain to another continent will provide a significant financial gain. Spain can also have naval fleets faster than other civilizations by grouping its ships. Philip II has the "Escorial" as his unique skill, conferring a combat bonus on units against civilizations that have another religion. Beware of the inquisitors who will have the opportunity to act one more blow against heresy. The exclusive unit of Spain is none other than the Conquistador. An elite unit, it receives an extra bonus by sharing the square of an apostle, missionary, or inquisitor. The Mission is a unique building that gives a bonus of faith if it is built on another continent and produces science if it is near a campus. Spain is an empire of faith, its religious power allows to spread its belief in the world and limit the impact of other religions.
