Actor Ken Leung, who has played Dr. Christopher "Topher" Zia, a surgeon and former Army Ranger, since the beginning of the series, will not be back in the fourth season of The Night Shift.

Ken Leung had signed to a contract that included an option for three seasons. The producers wanted him back but the actor chose to follow other opportunities.

The finale of the third season saw the character's dismissal by the hospital's new owner, leading to a strike by all his co-workers at the San Antonio Memorial Hospital emergency room. A way out all found for the character who will not make an appearance again as a goodbye …

Ken Leung is known for his roles as Miles Straume in the series Lost and Leon Tao in the series Person of Interest. We could see him recently in the cinema in the seventh episode of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where he played Admiral Satura.

The series The Night Shift will return to NBC for a fourth season in June 2017.
