For its final season released on June 27, 2020 one would have thought that the German series Dark, would have struggled to finish on something very coherent and not too incredible. In the end, it is hands down that she succeeds in her bet and releases 8 episodes worthy of the two previous seasons. A sought-after ending, which leaves food for thought and which definitely ranks the series in the top of science fiction shows. One would have thought that the series created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, would eventually follow the path of other bestsellers on the Netflix platform. That is to say too many seasons, which end up discrediting the quality of the series. But Dark knew how to do the right thing. And this is noteworthy. A clean series, thoughtful from the very first episode to the last.
Dark: a series a little complicated to follow
Followers of previous seasons useless to remember that the episodes are sometimes difficult to follow. We get lost in our thoughts for a few seconds, and we go from 2020 to 1988. Which is both the biggest flaw and the best quality of this series, and especially in this season 3. The chain elements and time travel had already lost us in previous years. So remember Martha's last sentence in season 2. "It's not from what era, but rather from what world?" So, to give a little glimpse of season 3, it's simply as many trips, but twice as complex. If you are the type who does not have memory of faces, we advise you to have a family tree on hand. The arrival of new characters as the story progresses does not make things easier! Despite a few scenes where we can actually lose track of the "who's who?", it is usually not very useful because all of them are perfectly calculated to quickly find our way. A defect for some, a quality for others. It doesn't matter because without these brain knots voluntarily provided by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Dark would not really be Dark. And above all, would not have had the success it deserves. With a small budget the two directors still managed to make you dream. Actors in harmony and especially characters who resemble each other perfectly as their age changes. The staging, the chosen colors adapted to the story and the excellent framing are always the strengths of Dark. The small flaw of this series, however, remains the same. Background music not especially necessary when the scenario itself already brings out a lot of emotions.
"Man is free to do what he wants, but he cannot want what he wants." – Arthur Schopenhauer
This quote could have been created especially for this season 3. Or maybe this season was inspired by that phrase. In this opus, each character engages in a quest of his own. As if each character was subject to a desire that is impossible to renounce. And each character takes a malicious pleasure in putting obstacles in the wheels of others. This creates even more nodes. As the episodes progress, we even come to wonder how to achieve a clean ending without it being sloppy. But the talent of the two directors leaves us with a corner, and finally leaves us with a last episode very clean. A conclusion that allows us to piece together the pieces of the puzzle at our own pace. On this latest episode, Dark looks like Interstellar and even seems to be inspired by it. In short, this season is a real success. If you enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, this one will certainly not disappoint you. Quite the contrary!
