Since the Coronavirus lockdown, many individuals are teleworking, gaming, or watching streaming. This has the effect of significantly increasing Internet traffic. Measures will therefore be taken.
What changes for SVOD?
Thierry Breton (European Commissioner for the Single Market, Industry, Digital, Defence and Space) has asked the CEO of Netflix to switch its content to standard quality, so as not to saturate the internet network in this time of COVID-19. Market leader, the platform (consuming about 15% of global Internet traffic) announced this Thursday, March 19, 2020, to implement a reduction in the speed of its streams in Europe, for 1 month, which should relieve the network by 25%. 
While videos will still be available in Full HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) and 4K (3840×2160 pixels ), they will be further compressed and users will automatically be offered the lowest bitrate.
"This will allow us to continue to guarantee a quality service for our members, in line with the service for which they paid (4K, HD, SD etc.) – but with the lowest possible flow rate".
Coronavirus and good deals
- Canal+ offers the passage of the encrypted channel in free of charge on all boxes, without compensation for non-subscribers. Be careful though! This will only be valid until 31 March.
For its subscribers, Canal + offers options to which they would not necessarily have subscribed, such as cinema, series, youth and documentary channels. (also until March 31, 2020) 
- Since March 18, 2020, the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel has been offering free access to its new streaming platform Madelen, which includes 13,000 heritage content (series, fiction, documentaries, concerts, etc.) then a subscription at € 2.99 after the 3 months free.
- Orange offers five youth channels on its boxes: Boomerang, Tiji, Boing, Toonami and Canal J and the four OCS channels: OCS Max, OCS City, OCS Choc and OCS Géants. (until March 31, 2020)
- SFR, has recently enriched its offer. All its fixed Internet subscribers will benefit, for one month, after activation, from the " Plus Jeunesse " package as well as the " Entertainment & Discovery" package.
- FREE offers its subscribers of the €2 package to go from 50 MB to 1 GB of mobile data as well as free youth channels during the month of March.
- ARTE provides educational resources due to the closure of schools on its EducARTE.fr platform since March 16.
- The Paris Opera offers the broadcast of its greatest shows, from Swan Lake, to Carmen, through The Barber of Seville or the Tchaikovsky symphony are freely accessible on the opera site for a few days.
The March Series
