Fritz Lang's classic, Metropolis (1927), is soon to be adapted into a mini-series by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.
The project will be produced by Universal Cable Productions and should see the light of day within three years. The exact role that Sam Esmail plays in the creative process is still being discussed, although he seems well on his way to taking the reins. Note that when it was released almost a hundred years ago, Metropolis was the most expensive film in the history of cinema.
The plot, which takes place in a futuristic society where rich operators rub shoulders with the sky at the tops of endless skyscrapers while the poorest expoities pile up in the shallows of the city, required expensive but above all revolutionary sets and special effects. The network has announced that it will invest about $ 10 million per episode : hoping that the visionary purpose of the film is not reduced to science fiction, although this is unlikely in view of the resources possessed by Sam Esmail.
