Are you looking for entertainment, wealth not knowing what to do with it, botox, drama, social parties, love stories and a group of friends united as possible in the same series? Then the Empire of bling was created for you! This brand new Netflix series, expected at the beginning of the year, composed of 8 episodes was released on January 15. Produced by Jeff Jenkins, it shakes up the codes of classic reality TV by bringing a whole new dimension.
Welcome to Eldorado
In The Empire of Bling, we follow the luxurious and unattainable lives of Christine, Anna, Kim Lee, Kelly, Jaime, Kane Lim, and Jessey, a mini Asian diaspora or of Asian origin. It is located in the United States, in Los Angeles, the city of stars par excellence (coincidence?). An entrepreneur, a famous DJ, a fashion blogger, a real estate heir… Their life paths are very different: none of them have become rich in the same way. Only Kevin has a much lower standard of living than his friends. Model by profession and adopted during his childhood, he is the last to have joined the group. It simply allows us to identify with Him. This is a very clever and subtle choice made by the writers: Kevin embodies normality, and then becomes our spokesperson in many completely insane situations, which could seem almost unrealistic. Example with one of his reactions: "239 dollars? for a single sea cucumber", to which his friend replies " It's not expensive"… However, Kevin is completely adopted by these wealthy individuals, who make no reference to the gap between their standard of living, and do not hesitate to pamper him as much as possible (Dior shoes at $ 110,000 as a gift, who says better?)
A life where boredom does not exist
Their circle is as limited as it is closed: one cannot enter without having been invited. They are exclusive, and would do everything for each other. But this does not prevent disputes and wars between them. Anna and Christine fight unrestrained and relentlessly against each other to obtain the figurative crown that will make one of them the queen. Low blows and pettiness are in the spotlight: neither of them will admit defeat without having given their maximum. And the least we can say is that the life of this small group is not easy! Finally, when it comes to rest, everything is relative: afternoon massages, private yoga classes, sumptuous evenings on an unlimited budget, Parisian trips and other getaway missions punctuate their day. The only watchwords: opulence, abundance, excess and fun!
No limit is the limit
Inseparable from this way of life, money is everywhere, and it is constantly. From the beginning of the first episode, the tone is set: "Are you dressing up in Chanel tonight? " or "I think the more is the better when it comes to jewelry". This lets us foreshadow the future… We understand very quickly that their lives are not dictated by any financial limit. Their credit card has no limit. Each of their desires becomes reality in the blink of an eye. As Kevin puts it: "Theyhave the whole world at their disposal". Their houses are breathtaking, all their clothes are from the greatest designers who bond close ties with such loyal customers. The house of Dior comes especially to Anna so that she can do her shopping in peace… Everything is reinforced and energized with a soundtrack where success is the main subject of music.
Between culture and friendship
We also discover the strong influence that Asian culture has on their daily lives, both positive and negative (no despoilers to let you discover it). It is very present in their lives, and they constantly refer to it. Some even preserve the traditions of their country. Moreover, even if their lives are clearly not ours, the indestructible bonds of friendship that they shamelessly display on the screen, closely linked to their common origins, is the first entry point they offer us, the spectators. This universal language of friendship allows us to understand and touch each other in an instant.
A reality show like we rarely see
So why watch this series? First of all, the representation of this community in a show is the first positive point. This is quite uncommon. The critics portray a mix between Crazy Rich Asian (the film is directly cited in the series and used as a point of comparison) and Selling Sunset (very good series incidentally binge watcher urgently if it is not yet done) for an explosive, funny, somewhat "too much" and really dramatic cocktail, but overall very successful. Although the format and subjects of this series may seem superficial and somewhat pathetic, we very quickly get attached to the personal and touching stories of the protagonists. They are all equally diverse. Indeed, we get to know them and this beyond appearing to them. They tell us more about their journey, and what got them to where they are today. This approach gives them greater depth, and strengthens the interest in them. They are thus more than "reality TV people", little considered and respected in general. In short: go see this nugget, especially if you want to escape from your current anxiety-provoking daily life (health crisis, yes we are talking about you), taken from the greatest scenarios of disaster series … Because yes, this series plays on the fact that it gives us a glimpse of life that we, common mortals, will have very little chance of getting, and yes we enjoy it, and yes we love it. The Empire of Bling is waiting for you!
