The results of the 78th Golden Globes ceremony fell tonight. Chinese director Chloé Zhao was crowned best director for her film "Nomadland". Chadwick Boseman was posthumously awarded Best Actor for his role in "Ma Rainey". Netflix comes out big winner.

The Golden Globes at a glance

This Sunday, February 28, the ceremony, entirely virtual, rewarded many people and many films. Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao won two prestigious awards for Nomadland : the Golden Globe for Best Film and Best Director. Becoming the first Asian woman to win this award, and the second woman after Barbra Streisand for her film Yentl in 1984. This year was historic because 2 other women were nominated alongside Chloé Zhao in this category: Regina King (One Night in Miami), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman). On the television side, Netflix has 42 nominations and won 10 statuettes, thanks to the series The Crown and The Lady's Game. Note that the animated film Soul from Pixar and Disney studios won the Golden Globe for best animated film, as well as best music. Some surprises also during this evening! Contrary to predictions, David Fincher's feature film Mank leaves empty-handed, and Aaron Sorkin's drama, The Chicago Seven only wins the Golden Globe for best screenplay.

Tahar Rahim, Florian Zeller and Alexandre Desplat, the three Frenchmen in the running for the Golden Globes left empty-handed, despite their nominations for prestigious awards.

In addition, the ceremony had some surprises in store for viewers as described by the journalist, Rachel Handler, of the English-language magazine Vulture. "But in this edition, as participants joined the videoconference in different configurations of haute couture and crumpled pajamas, […] the Golden Globes set off an unprecedented level of lawlessness, unwittingly producing one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever seen. "

A posthumous award for the late Chadwick Boseman

Known to the general international public for Black Panther, actor Chadwick Boseman was crowned best actor for his swan song performance in Ma Rianey's Black Bottom. The T'Challa singer died in 2020 at the age of 43 following his battle with colon cancer. His widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award on his behalf. In a moving and passionate speech, she evokes her husband's feelings. "He would thank God, he would thank his parents, and he would thank his ancestors for their guidance and sacrifices." This is not the first time an actor has received a Golden Globe posthumously. Unfortunately, Boseman has joined the pantheon of actors who have suffered the same fate. He joined the ranks of James Dean, Heath Ledger, Howard Ashman, Peter Finch, Spencer Tracey and Raúl Juliá. Despite this, audiences and critics alike expect to see Chadwick Boseman win an Oscar winner for his portrayal of Levee Green in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

Netflix wins success with The Crown and The Lady's Game

Unlike last year, Netflix received a record number of nominations: 42 in all! Of these 42 nominations, Netflix won ten statuettes. A remontada compared to last year, when the streaming platform had won only 2 trophies. A beautiful turnaround possible thanks to two flagship series: The Crown and Le Jeu de la Dame. They alone shared 5 prizes, half of the Netflix wins. A favourite of audiences and critics, the British series The Crown was awarded in the following categories: Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles), Best Actress in a Drama Series (Emma Corrin as Princess Diana) and Best Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher). For its part, The Lady's Game won two Golden Globes: best mini-series and best actress in a mini-series for Anya Taylor-Joy.
