Le dimanche 7 Mai à Köln (Cologne), BlutEngel se produisait sur scène pour leur Leitbild Tour, une dernière date emblématique avant les deux dates finales à Berlin quelques jours plus tard (vous pouvez trouver le report du concert en cliquant ici). Lors de cet événement, j’ai eu l’immense privilège d’interviewer Chris Pohl, le chanteur de BlutEngel. J’ai fait le choix de simplement retranscrire et de ne pas corriger l’interview originale pour plus d’authenticité, ainsi que de respecter au mieux son ambiance lors de la traduction. Moi : I don’t want to do a basic interview like « Where did BlutEngel come » or whatever because BlutEngel is so much deeper than that, so…
Je n’ai pas envie de faire une interview basique du style « D’où vient BlutEngel » ou ce genre de choses car BlutEngel est tellement plus profond que ça, donc…
Chris : Yeah, everybody know, should know that (he smiles).
Oui, tout le monde le sait ou devrait le savoir (il sourit).
Moi : Have you ever considered how much your words touched some people, creating an echo that can drive them, help them into difficult choices sometimes ? What are your feelings about that ?
Avez-vous déjà considéré combien vos mots touchaient certaines personnes, créant un écho qui les guidait, les aidait dans des choix difficiles parfois ? Quel est votre ressenti vis-à-vis de ça ?
Chris : Yeah, I heard from many fans that my songs helped them out of some bad situations and they feel like understanding so… yeah, this is really cool because when I get some mails or letters from the fans, it’s always good for me to read that my music has kind of an influence to them, they always like it when I can helped the people, I don’t want to be like a psychologist so… but it’s cool when my thoughts and my feelings that I impress with my songs… this words helped them, so, this is really cool… This kind of understanding makes the concert so cool because the people say, they are listening to my words, and I say, « OK they understand me and they know I will understand them » and this is a really really good feeling, I really like it yeah.
Oui, j’ai entendu de la part de beaucoup de fans que mes chansons les aidaient à se sortir de situations difficiles, qu’ils se sentaient compris donc… Oui, c’est vraiment cool car quand je reçois des emails ou des lettres de fans, c’est toujours agréable pour moi de lire que ma musique a un genre d’influence sur eux, ils apprécient toujours quand je peux aider les gens, je ne veux pas être comme un psychologue… mais c’est cool quand mes pensées et mes sentiments que je pose dans mes chansons… que ces mots les aident, donc, c’est vraiment cool… Ce genre de compréhension rend le concert tellement cool car les gens disent, ils écoutent mes paroles, et je dis « OK, ils me comprennent et ils savent que je vais les comprendre » et c’est vraiment un très très bon ressenti, j’aime vraiment beaucoup ça oui.
Moi : In your song « The Plague », you’re using themes that you’re don’t often use in your other songs. Are you willing to give us more details about the why ?
Dans votre chanson « The Plague », vous utilisez des thèmes que vous n’avez pas l’habitude d’utiliser dans vos autres chansons. Voudriez-vous nous donner plus de détails sur le pourquoi ?
Chris : Yeah, I mean this is a kind of… yeah… It deals about the bad situation in the world like… Now, when you watch TV or you listen to the news, it’s like so many bad things are happening and it’s so crazy that is all are humans and when you do that to the other, so like they hurting themselves, they kill themselves and it’s always like… and so the Plague mean that I’m the conscious of to tell you « OK… Is it really OK to you…? You… Really, you can sleep ? When you see what’s happening around you… » So… It has a big influence when I produce the CD because the situation in Germany and all over the world gets really really weird and it has a real influence the first time when I produced the CD, because normally I produce a CD and the world is always bad but it was so many bad news and it’s always so combined, I was producing and writing songs and every day I watch TV and say « Oye… Another big shit going on in the world » so it has a big influence on the lyrics this time and yeah The Plague is like this conscience that I want to say to the people « So come on, wake up, you can’t sleep when you see what’s happening around you, you have to do something against it, and they’re so many points that someone has to do something against this shit that’s happening » Yeah, that’s what I want to express with the song .
Oui, je veux dire… oui… Ça parle de la situation déplorable dans le monde… Aujourd’hui, quand vous regardez la télévision ou que vous écoutez les nouvelles, tellement de mauvaises choses se passent et c’est tellement hallucinant, ce sont tous des êtres humains et quand tu fais ça à d’autres, comme quand ils se blessent entre eux ou qu’ils s’entretuent… et « The Plague » veut dire que je suis conscient de ça et de dire « OK… Est-ce que c’est vraiment OK pour vous ? Vous… Vraiment, vous arrivez à dormir ? Quand vous voyez ce qui arrive autour de vous… » Donc… Ça a eu une grande influence quand j’ai produit le CD car la situation en Allemagne, et dans le monde entier, devient vraiment très très bizarre et ça a vraiment eu pour la première fois une réelle influence sur cet album parce que, d’habitude, quand je produis un CD, le monde va toujours mal, mais là il y a eu tellement de mauvaises nouvelles en si peu de temps, je produisais et écrivais des chansons et, chaque jour, je regardais la télévision et me disais « Oye, une nouvelle grosse m***e est arrivée dans le monde » donc ça a eu une grosse influence sur les paroles cette fois et oui, « The Plague » est la conscience qui me permet de dire aux gens « Franchement, réveillez-vous, vous ne pouvez pas dormir quand vous voyez ce qui arrive autour de vous, vous devez faire quelque chose contre ça, et il y a plein de points sur lesquels chacun peut faire quelque chose contre toute cette m***e qui arrive » Oui, c’est ce que je voulais exprimer dans la chanson.
Moi : Do you plan to do that more often in the future ? Or, is this just a one shot ?
Avez-vous prévu de faire ça plus souvent dans le futur ou c’était juste une exception ?
Chris : I don’t know, I don’t know, so it depends on what’s happening so… but I believe that… yeah… It would never change or not so fast so, I don’t know what the next lyrics will be so… I don’t know.
Je ne sais pas, je ne sais pas, ça dépend de ce qui arrive donc… Mais je crois que… oui… ça ne changera jamais ou pas aussi rapidement donc… Je ne sais pas ce que seront les prochaines paroles donc… Je ne sais pas.
Moi : In your song « Say something », I feel that you may have a reference to the « Sisters of Mercy’s album « First and last and always ». Is it true or not? And if it’s true, have you ever made those kind of references in other songs?
Dans votre chanson « Say something », j’ai l’impression que vous faites référence à l’album « First and last and always » de Sisters of Mercy. Est-ce vrai ? Et si ça l’est, avez-vous déjà fait ce genre de références dans d’autres chansons ?
Chris : (He smiles) Yeah, you’re right because I’m a kind of… I’m not the biggest fan but I really like them, I like the style and I always hoped that they produced a new album but they haven’t so… Yeah, I like the spirit because many bands do something like it’s called Neue Deutsche Härte or they do futurepop stuff or synthpop and I always liked to pick some of the old elements from the old gothic songs and put in in a new style, in a BlutEngel style, so we have some songs like Black as always be influenced by Sisters of Mercy, Say something is the most… yeah… everybody say « Aaaah come on it’s like Sisters of Mercy » but it’s OK because… yeah… I like them and I think they should do a new album, they don’t so I… OK… I do some songs with the spirit of Sisters and we did it on the last CD like Save Us was like with the « hey nanana »… and yeah we keep on working on the others songs from the new CD like Say something and Black yeah and it’s OK but it’s like… to say thank you for the music they gave to me when I was young and I have all the Sisters’ CDs and I like his deep voice when it was like « Hey now now, sing this corrosion » so… Yeah it really influenced me on the new CD and now we’re on the point that we can do it because, on the beginning, we start like an electroband so it was impossible to do some guitars in the songs and now we are so open and the people seems to like it so that we can say « OK we want to do some guitars in it in a Sisters of Mercy mood and it’s OK » and the people say « Oh OK, it’s cool I like it » and so. Maybe on the next CD, there are more songs, I don’t know so yeah… But it’s cool and it’s really fun to sing like… because it’s rock… yeah I like it.
(Il sourit) Oui, vous avez raison car je suis… Je ne suis pas leur plus grand fan mais je les aime vraiment beaucoup, j’aime le style et j’ai toujours l’espoir qu’ils sortent un nouvel album mais ils ne le font pas donc… Oui, j’aime l’esprit parce que beaucoup de groupes font des choses comme le Neue Deutsche Härte ou ils font de la future pop ou synthpop, et j’ai toujours aimé prendre certains des vieux éléments des vieilles chansons gothiques et de les rassembler dans un nouveau genre, dans le genre BlutEngel, donc nous avons certaines chansons comme « Black » qui ont toujours été influencées par Sisters of Mercy, « Say something » également… oui… Tout le monde dit « Aaaaah allez ça ressemble à Sisters of Mercy » mais c’est bien parce que… oui… je les aime et je pense qu’ils devraient sortir un nouvel album, ils ne le font pas donc je… OK… je fais quelques chansons dans l’esprit de Sisters et nous l’avons fait dans le précédent CD [note : Omen] avec « Save us » et ses » hey nanana »… et oui, nous avons continué sur les autres chansons du nouvel album comme « Say something » ou « Black » oui, et c’est bien mais c’est comme… pour dire merci pour la musique qu’ils m’ont donnés quand j’étais jeune, et j’ai tous les albums de Sisters of Mercy et j’aime sa voix caverneuse comme dans « Hey now, sing this corrosion to me » donc… Oui, ça m’a vraiment influencé sur le nouvel album et maintenant nous sommes à un point où nous pouvons le faire car au début, nous avons commencés en tant que groupe électro donc il était impossible d’ajouter des guitares dans les chansons et maintenant nous sommes tellement ouverts et les gens semblent l’apprécier donc nous pouvons dire « OK, nous voulons ajouter des guitares à la façon de Sisters of Mercy et c’est OK » et les gens disent « Oh OK, c’est bien, j’aime bien » donc. Peut-être que sur le prochain CD il y aura plus de chansons [dans ce style], je ne sais pas donc… Mais c’est cool et c’est vraiment fun à chanter… parce que c’est rock… oui j’aime ça.
Moi : What is the question you always wanted to hear in an interview but never heard ? And which is the answer ?
Quelle est la question que vous avez toujours voulu entendre lors d’une interview mais qu’on ne vous a jamais posé ? Et quelle serait sa réponse ?
Chris : Hey, good question! I don’t know… Hmmm… I mean I gave so many interviews and there are so many questions, I don’t know which question I haven’t heard before so… pffff I don’t know (he laughs), I don’t know sorry! We can’t tell you… But if you have one that I never heard before just tell me! (he smiles) Ask me the question!
Hey, bonne question ! Je ne sais pas… Hmmm… Je veux dire, j’ai donné tellement d’interviews et il y a tellement de questions, je ne sais pas quelle question je n’ai jamais entendu auparavant donc… pffff je ne sais pas ! (il rit), je ne sais pas, désolé ! Je ne peux pas vous dire… mais si vous en avez une que je n’ai jamais entendu auparavant, dites-le moi ! (il sourit) Posez-moi la question !

Moi : And, to finish, because we don’t see you as often as we wish in France, do you have any plans to come soon ? Maybe a big world tour for your twenty years ?
Et, pour terminer, parce qu’on ne vous voit pas en France aussi souvent qu’on le voudrait, avez-vous des projets pour venir bientôt ? Peut-être une grosse tournée pour vos 20 ans de carrière ?
Chris : I don’t know, it’s always a problem because… yeah, the problem is, it’s bad to say, but it’s the money. We are a lot of people, we have to travel and they are some questions from France or Italy they ask « Do you wanna play? » but they don’t offer that much money to cover the expenses so I say when I play outside of Germany, in Europe, I don’t want to earn money but just I have to cover my expenses, I have to pay my musicians, I have to pay the technic guys and stuff, and so, it’s really bad because they can’t afford the demand of money we need to travel there, to rent the bus and stuff and… yeah I hope that it will change but I don’t want to reduce the band so when I can say « OK I can come alone or ??? » it makes no sense ’cause I have to bring all the guys from the band with me and… So maybe in the future we can ask them again and maybe they can say « OK let’s try it, so… let’s try, we cover your expenses a little and if it works it’s good, it’s OK and if it’s not hmm maybe we can, I don’t know, find a deal » so we really want to play there because we were in Paris with my former band Terminal Choice, we were there, and yeah, it was really cool for us, many years ago, and it was cool and yeah, with Blutengel we have never been there so… it’s time…
Je ne sais pas, c’est toujours un problème parce que… oui, le problème est, ce n’est pas bien de le dire, mais c’est l’argent. Nous sommes beaucoup de personnes, nous devons voyager et on nous demande souvent, en France ou en Italie, « Voulez-vous venir jouer ? » mais ils ne nous offrent pas assez d’argent pour couvrir les dépenses donc je dis, quand je joue en dehors de l’Allemagne, en Europe, je ne veux pas gagner de l’argent mais juste au moins couvrir mes dépenses, je dois payer mes musiciens, je dois payer mes techniciens tout ça, donc, c’est vraiment dommage qu’ils ne peuvent pas offrir la demande d’argent dont nous avons besoin pour voyager jusque là-bas, de louer le bus, tout ça… oui, j’espère que ça changera mais je ne veux pas réduire le groupe ou dire « OK, je peux venir tout seul ou…??? », ça n’a pas de sens parce que je dois emmener toutes les autres personnes avec moi et… Donc peut-être, à l’avenir, nous pourrons leur demander une nouvelle fois et peut-être qu’ils diront « OK, essayons… Essayons, nous couvrons une partie de vos dépenses et si ça marche, c’est bien, c’est OK, et si ça ne marche pas hmm… peut-être pouvons-nous, je ne sais pas, trouver un arrangement ». Nous aimerions vraiment jouer là-bas parce que j’étais à Paris avec mon ancien groupe Terminal Choice, nous y étions, et oui, c’était vraiment cool pour nous, il y a des années, et c’était cool oui, avec BlutEngel, nous ne sommes jamais venus [à Paris] donc… Il est temps…

Chris : Yeah, I really like to play in France that I can say « Oh bonjour, je m’appelle Chris Pohl, je suis de Berlin » I don’t know. Yeah I learned some French at school so long ago.
Oui, j’aimerais vraiment venir jouer en France pour pouvoir dire « Oh bonjour, je m’appelle Chris Pohl, je suis de Berlin » je ne sais pas. Oui, j’ai appris un peu de français à l’école il y a longtemps.
Moi : And do you have something to say to your French fans ?
Et avez-vous quelque chose à dire à vos fans français ?
Chris : Yeah, I hope that they will listen to BlutEngel anyway and I hope to maybe one day meet them in France live, it will be really really nice, I really like to play there so, maybe there’s a chance one day in the future, I hope so.
Oui, j’espère qu’ils écouteront BlutEngel malgré tout et j’espère un jour les rencontrer lors d’un concert en France, ce serait vraiment vraiment chouette, j’avais vraiment aimé jouer là-bas donc, peut-être qu’il y aura une chance un jour dans le futur, je l’espère.
J’y ai découvert un homme à la hauteur de ses textes, sensible et touchant, très abordable et passionné. Une réelle belle rencontre pour une première interview qui, je l’espère, ne sera que la première de beaucoup d’autres !
