At the Fête du Bruit in Landerneau, we met LE MAMØØTH, a Brest rock band that handles both self-mockery and the clef de sol. Discovering their music on stage was not enough, it was necessary to try to know these atypical musicians and full of malice. We talked about them, the beginnings of the band, squats and ethanol.
"Six of us lived on a farm"
Hello THE MAMØØTH!
THE MAMØØTH: Hello!
I didn't know your band until I saw you play just now. But I had seen "Hunt for LE MAMØØTH" in the "interests" section of your Facebook page. It made me laugh.
Paul [singing] : Did we mark that? We have to change, it's been a long time! [laughs]
I also saw that you chose this name in reference to the chain of big box stores.
Paul : Which channel?
Thomas [bass] : I think she's talking about Mammoth hypermarkets.
Paul : Oh no, not at all, where did you see that?
On the internet. You can really find anything on the internet. Where does this name come from then?
Paul : Do you know City Hunter, Nicky Larson's animated series?
Not.
Paul: Well, Mammoth is a City Hunter character!
"We're not a punk band"
I also saw on the internet, so maybe it's wrong, that you all live in a squat?
Maël [guitar] : We lived.
Paul : The news is not wrong, but it's in the past!
Maël : We lived at 6 in a farm. We organized concerts, bands came from all over France to play on this farm. You see, there are not many rooms in Brest.
It's very punk! How did you meet MAMØØTH?
Paul : I studied engineering. At that time, Maël was playing in another band and I found myself recording him, his band. That's how we both met. For my part, I had a punk band with Thomas. The three of us and Joshua, our former drummer, created LE MAMØØTH.
Is your music punk?
Mael: Classification is not punk. We're rock.
Are you a committed group?
Thomas : LE MAMØØTH's music is not politicized.
Paul : We separate music and politics, so that our productions are not leaden.
I have one last question that is very easy but can be the hardest if you don't have inspiration. THE MAMØØTH in four words?
Renan [technician who worked with LE MAMØØTH on the album]: Technical problems.
[general laughter]
Mael: Calvados, Calvados.
Quentin [drums]: Armaniack.
Paul [vocals]: Punctuality, efficiency… [laughs].
Thomas [bass]: Fun.
Fun, I like it.
