We had the chance to meet Aurora before her Parisian concert at La Cigale. Thirty minutes of confidences and revelations to better appreciate this little fairy of the north. We are the last of a long day of promotion, but it is with a radiant smile and a still palpable energy that Aurora receives us. Crouching on a red velvet sofa, she looks like a mischievous and benevolent harlequin. Warm and available, this exchange was a memorable interview! First of all: how are you? I'm very good… I'm good! (In French) How does it feel to come back to Paris? It's great, I love being in Paris. I came 4 times this year for my own pleasure. I think I could live here. I love red wine, I love bread… and butter… and I eat relatively late. Is it only for the food or is there something else you like in Paris? I love the streets and the people. They're just natural. You know how they feel, you know when they're bored, when they're happy, which I appreciate because I always have trouble understanding people when they're not transparent. And I love your respect for art! We discovered you with your first album. We had the chance to see you in concert at La Maroquinerie. What has your daily life been like today since this adventure began? It is an adventure indeed! Every day is different. Today I painted and flew to Paris. I had interviews and acoustic sessions. I ate cakes, drank coffee. Right now, I get up early, fly, play concerts, and go to another country and so on. It's a very busy life, but it's new every day, which I love. And at every concert there are lots of new people, a new place and a new energy; This is very important to me otherwise I would die of boredom. And I also feel different every time I play. We remember your little documentary "Nothing is Eternal" very touching and disturbing at the same time. Was it a confession, an inheritance, or a reminder to yourself? It was a kind of legacy, but also a reminder. Not just for me… for people on earth. The way I live gives me a lot of happiness even though my life is very busy. It's a lot of work and you have to be persistent to exist in this environment. But it's all about passion and that's where the energy comes from. I'm not the only person who is busy: we are all busy in different ways with pressure, stress… I wanted to make a video about taking time to look around. I know it sounds easy and you might think it doesn't change anything… But in fact it is! I do it all the time, 5 times today: I sit down and think about things, people, what surrounds me… To all those little things that make me happy and make everything better. https://youtu.be/4vdBorK67tk I wanted to make this video to remember it in a few years, sixty years from now when I'll be 80. It's never too late to start becoming aware of these little things. It's living in the moment. You can't live any other way. I never think about tomorrow or yesterday. I never have grief, except when I lose; I can be sad for a long time. But other than that, I don't think about anything else. The present, you and me… Are you still afraid? I was never afraid of death. I think it's a very comforting thing. Imagine if we lived forever how cold we would become. These little things become insignificant if you live for hundreds of years. And I love that these little things are so special. They are important because they are only there for such a short time. This is an opportunity for me to release two apples that we share together by making a wish. I'm going to tell you a secret I haven't told anyone about. But I'll tell you. In my next step (next album) there will be a song… Maybe on apples. You'll understand it when you hear it… On what is essential. I feel like your first album was a way to get attention. Now that you have it, you can express yourself more freely and deliver a message with your second album. There is one thing I really like. You often talk about warriors. But what is a warrior to you? (between two bites of apple) In the first album, a warrior meant that even though I feel weak, small, sad, feel like I can't do anything, disappoint myself – me and the people around me – I'm strong despite everything. It's very hard to get out of this state when you're there… This is when people should call themselves warriors, because being a human can be so difficult. It's good to remember that you're made of materials stronger than you think and to do more than you think. You have to try! Most people on their deathbed think more often about their regret. They think about what they could have done and what they didn't. So you have to be stronger and surpass yourself. https://youtu.be/4CmcnWQ-754 In my new album, warrior is more political, in a bigger perspective. It's less individual, although we have to start with ourselves. When you are healthy and happy, you can more easily contribute to society. We can create things, have ideas, help people, if we have enough money, we can share it with those who have less. It's important to have something extra to become the warrior that others need to become one in turn. Many people don't understand the importance of feminism. They think it's something against men when it's all about equality. Some people think we already have it, but in many countries or even right next to you it's not yet the case: that's why we always talk about it. It's not because for me it's going well that I'm going to stop fighting only those who still need it. And that's what's important about this new definition of warrior. We have to fight until everyone is good because we are part of a big whole. This allows me to ask you my next question. What are you fighting for? You were talking about feminism… For feminism… I fight against the media industry, non-reusable plastic objects. I fight for the planet, because without it we have nowhere to live and for women, because without us there are no mothers, sisters, human beings. I fight for animals because they can't express themselves so we have to be their voice. I fight for the world to accept that a man can be feminine without being gay, that a man can cry without being weak… I fight for and against a lot of things because I take things very seriously even if it's not part of me. As soon as it comes to something alive, I take it in a very personal way. https://youtu.be/wULeXeQkqd0 Let's talk about your latest album, Infections Of A Different Kind – Step 1 (and there will be a step 2 soon). It is also the title of the last song of this album. It sounds like a prayer. Is this the meaning you wanted to give to the album as well? The album is a sample of all those things I'm fighting for. Queendom talks about feminism but not only. This is my ideal world with more acceptance and compassion. Forgotten Love is about freeing ourselves from things that weigh us down like breakups. There are also some sad stories like in Chruchyard. Gentle Earthquakes is more of a power grab story, just to remind people that these things can happen so you have to fight that. Soft Universe talks about so many things… All Is Soft Inside (it's one of my favorite songs) is basically about people who can't talk about their inner emotion and become stones. I think that's how people become cruel. We need to bring out certain things before they manifest in us. This song is also much more than that and can be very personal to everyone. Infections Of A Different Kind is not just like a prayer. It's an almost philosophical song. With my voice I can say things to an audience, so I thought I should ask questions that people could listen to and answer in their heads. For example, is religion a safe place or a place to judge? Right now we are in a strange period in politics, with what is happening in Brazil for example… A lot of my fans are gay and we're all kind of strangers: we're all a little weird, a little shy or too extreme, eccentric or misunderstood… Gay in a place where people are not modern in their way of thinking… Now is the time to go in that direction and tell them that the rest of the world can be gentle with them. We've been through this kind of thing before in history. I think we can overcome hatred: it breaks my heart how an entire country can change in this way, focusing on hate rather than progress and it is scary! Even women's rights can change so quickly. It happened in a positive way, but some are already thinking about going back. So we must always remain vigilant and fight What can we expect from Step 2? The prospect will be even wilder. It will always be individual, at times, but the spirit behind it is more universal and more political; More angry but just as gentle. Because the harder I get, the softer I become. It is a kind of balance. I think anger makes me sad. I spent a lot of time teaching my body to reject anger. Blind anger is dangerous: it can hurt people and it's exhausting. Many women experience this; It keeps everything instead of exploding. As we grow up, we use anger for something else, we work on it, we channel it into energy. That's what I do: it's a fuel to keep moving forward. So when I get tired, I remind myself that anger also keeps me awake. And I regret that people aren't more angry that way. In the world of music we need this energy! Be passionate, committed! We've always been, but the top of the Billboard is lighter, because people also need to escape from all that. But I'd like people to have that angry passion, if it's used as a way to remember injustices rather than just anger. Your music seems to be the solution: mix committed ideas with joy, music that makes you happy. An energy sometimes tender and sensitive, sad that allows us to refocus to better explode together in benevolence! Thank you I wanted to talk to you about the covers you did. Each time you find a way to reinvent and sublimate them. Have you ever had feedback from the artists whose songs you covered? I don't know! I never looked to see if I had any feedback. I don't spend a lot of time on the internet and I don't look at social media too much. So I'm not sure what people think of my covers. (laughs) No, I really don't know! There is something else I wanted to talk about with you, it is the title Helvegen that you sang with Wardruna. First of all, how did you meet them? https://youtu.be/FnkTuHP9q3o I've been a big fan of their music for a long time and I wanted people to listen to it because it's part of my cultural heritage, this kind of ancient pagan music, but with a more modern rhythm. They do things that are historically very correct, in the composition and use of instruments and they mix their songs themselves. They have become good friends of mine now; I did a few concerts with them. I would like to make music with them, I really hope it will be done! So I had been listening to them for a long time and suddenly I became a great artist – I don't know how it happened (laughs) – and then radio stations asked me to make a playlist of songs I like. I don't listen to that much music so I put Enya, Leonard Cohen, Wardruna, who are the artists I listen to the most finally. It happened to them and they wrote to me to thank me for making them known, sometimes outside the country. And it led us to do things together. It's really great! They are wonderful. How about you? How do you connect to this music and Viking culture? And is that something you'd like to use in your music? Yes, I think so, because I'd like to explore a lot of different things. It's a culture that has always been dear to my heart: folk music, Norwegian music and pagan music. I love all things folkloric and Celtic too. You can feel it in my melodies and my way of singing I think. I like to mix these influences with other styles: pop, organic… I love inviting people to discover and love this folk music even without knowing it. I also do a lot of "nature appeals" like in Queendom. I love that kind of sound; It's like my own language, a language of emotion and freedom… and love too! I think in my own way, I'm going to become more and more folk, pagan and wild! Do you have any Norwegian artists to advise us? You should listen to Askjell! He will open for me tomorrow. https://youtu.be/vpQxrKdSTWk So we'll see tomorrow? Yes! Yes! Isn't it even more exciting? When someone advises you an artist and you are actually going to discover him live tomorrow? You absolutely have to see it, it's great. It's Neo-classical / pop / electro… lots of things! He has a track on soundcloud but there's a lot more to come! And we did some projects together. Speaking of tomorrow, how do you feel when you're on stage? It feels like your whole body is talking when you sing. It's fascinating! What is going on in you in these moments? I feel a lot of things and it's blackout at the same time. It's like I'm not really there but I see people and I feel really free. Sometimes I feel like I'm a little stupid, but I don't care. I know I can do anything I love. It's like my body has no skin left, I feel light. I love screaming as loud as I can and whispering just as softly. Explore all my ligaments, my muscles, my spectrum. It's very satisfying especially when you're a little angry, you can sing in songs like Under The Water, where I can make my little popotin swim. https://youtu.be/zVGQWw4Ap6o Before I didn't really like the stage but now I really like it! And it's great to be in a room with all these strangers for 2 hours. We laugh, we dance, we cry… It's magical how music allows people to come together!
