The post-rock band God Is An Astronaut will be in concert on May 13 at the Trabendo in Paris. The opportunity for the most curious among you to go on a transcendent musical journey.
We don't often talk about a Post-Rock band, a style that doesn't get much media coverage and for which you have to be a bit of a music lover. Here is a band that we wanted you to discover and that will soon be in concert in Paris.
The origins of God Is An Astronaut
It was in 2002, in Ireland, that God Is An Astronaut (GIAA) was born around Torsten and Niels Kinsella, twins whose love of psyche and space rock music will lead them to record a first album, with Noel Healy on drums, on their own label: The End of the Beginning. It is a real success that makes them noticed, until it is broadcast on MTV.
Their music without words is at the same time powerful, intense and melodic rock but to which is added in addition to the dreamlike, delicacy and an invitation to travel. Besides, one wonders if the name of their group does not come from there. But it seems that it would come from a replica of the film Cabal by Clive Barker released in 1990.
It was not until their second album that their music crossed the borders of Ireland, England and the rest of Europe.
While preparing Far From Refuge, their third album, the band also began an international career. They began a first tour in the United States in 2008 which unfortunately ended with the theft of their equipment. But far from stopping them, the band continues with a new album, God Is an Astronaut, the same year!
GIAA wins as one of the pillars of post rock
It was not until Age of the Fifth Sun that the group came to enrich itself with a fourth member, Jamie Dean, on keyboard. This new addition results in a remastering of their entire repertoire.
Since then, we cite Origins in 2013 and Helios Erebus in 2015. Finally on April 27th their latest album under the Napalm Record label, Epitaph! The sublime artwork of the album is signed Fursy Teyssier, leader of the French shoegaze group Les Discrets.
Epitaph, their latest album
The teasing began at the end of January 2018 and it is in March that the eponymous title of the album is released:
Dark, mysterious, sad or even melancholic. The atmosphere is set, just like this music that comes to rise in power. We already know that this new album that arrives may prove impressive. The clip sends shivers down our spine.
Mid-April, we discover Komorebi, another extract of Epitaph. Komorebi is a term, a concept that comes from Japan: it is about that moment when nature is sublimated by the rays of the sun, a fleeting moment that the band tries to freeze musically. Rather successful, a title between awakening, hope and wonder that is extinguished in a sigh.
Listening to the album, we validate the graphic choice of the artwork.
We discover a worked atmosphere, impressive compositions, a journey … to the afterlife this time.
There is something more spiritual one would say, something of introspection, of psychoanalysis almost. The theme of sadness and grief are very present. It is an inner struggle towards the light. It is a soul that seeks to attain enchantment.
We then discover that the album ends with a tribute track to their little cousin, who died tragically at the age of 7. We understand better then why all this darkness. This album is an enforceable, the best way we found the Kinsella twins to grieve and move on as much as possible.
It is difficult to remain insensitive to Epitaph's gait, to its intensity; We end up finding this endearing opus and appropriating it.
After a stop in Lyon, the band will be performing at the Trabendo in Paris on May 13 before leaving for Colmar and Holland, which will be the final point of this European tour.
