On the occasion of the release of his new single Tanzania, Just Focus spoke with the artist KVM to discuss his music, but also his desire to escape. Focus!
Who is KVM?
Aged 24, the young singer KVM already reveals a well-thought-out and mastered universe. With Tanzania, everything is coherent and without overdoing it, Camilia, her real name, has managed to digest her multiple influences and create something similar to her talent. Bathed in a family that has always had music as a driving force: instrumentalist sisters, singer mother. It is therefore natural that she too turned to an artistic career. Something that was rather successful, because following one of his covers, it ends up being shared on Booba's Instagram account. Quite a boost when you know that this sharing has given him considerable visibility and 15,000 new subscribers!
Tanzania: A Call to Escape
As we all know, 2020 was quite chaotic in many aspects. Between confinement and border closures, the time is not really for a getaway. To fill the gap, KVM is getting creative. Indeed, his latest single Tanzania was conceived during the first lockdown. In his words, it was written for: "Freeze time, escape". Everything is done to create this change of scenery: the aerial atmosphere of the title and the clip shot under an azure sky make us glide happily and allow us to imagine ourselves far from everything. When asked if she has ever been to Tanzania, KVM laughs: "Not yet, maybe one day." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ5ndBwFeQc&ab_channel=KVMOfficiel In addition, travel is a recurring theme for the singer. And for good reason, in a professional setting, she lived in Arizona and Los Angeles. If the change of culture was at the rendezvous, these different stays in the country of Uncle Sam allowed her to "think and know what she really wanted". Think and decide. Make a choice, but above all do the right one: between a more classic life or an artistic life. For her, the decision is quickly made. "I've been immersed in it since I was little, music is what I like to do". It is therefore without regret, but especially with passion, that KVM launches into music.
Inspirations, upcoming project: KVM tells us everything!
If the United States was a dream destination for the young singer, her inspirations also come from across the Atlantic. As an influence, she quotes: "6lack, Teyana Taylor, Summer Walker". In short, artists from his generation. And not least, because they are artists considered as the next generation of American RnB. Whether it's 6lack's East Atlanta Love Letter album, or Summer Walker's Over It , both are considered instant classics. Just like Frank Ocean's Blonde , for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwErpRtwZjs&ab_channel=KVMOfficiel KVM is therefore inspired by the best. Nevertheless, she also likes what happens in France. Indeed, it is not uncommon to see under her clips comments comparing her to Wallen or other RnB artists of the 2000s. She obviously takes this comparison as a compliment. If her audience perceives her as a direct descendant of these artists, it is more artists like Sch, Ninho or Booba who inspire her. Finally, regarding the sequel, KVM "takes its time". After Tanzania, the singer is in the middle of composing new titles and already has several songs ready to go. For now, KVM is still enjoying a bit of success in Tanzania, which currently has more than 200,000 views and is rotating on the Trace channel. Camilia is slowly but surely preparing her way. In summary, with Tanzania, KVM has all the attributes of a great, she knows what she wants and by dint of work, the singer will certainly be one of the spearheads of the new RnB scene in France.
