Singer Cécile McLorin Salvant returns with Dreams and Daggers, third album well filled, recorded live and with strings.
Cécile McLorin Salvant, a jazz voice to discover
Album after album, Cécile McLorin Salvant recalls that she is anything but the cliché of the "jazz singer". Revealed to the general public in 2013 with the sumptuous WomanChild, she had raised the tone, two years later, with For One To Love, an even more controlled record. On September 29th, the talented Cécile McLorin Salvant presents her new opus Dreams and Daggers (Mack Avenue label). This one is actually a double album of 23 tracks, only five of which are originals composed and arranged by her bassist while she wrote the lyrics. These five tracks were recorded in the studio with the Catalyst Quartet string quartet, while all the others were recorded live at the famous club The Village Vanguard in New York. In this context, the singer makes us relive a period of more than 50 years of vocal jazz through covers and rearranged standards.
Listening, here is You're My Thrill by Cécile McLorin Salvant:
It is not the power, nor the timbre, nor the amplitude, that amaze, but rather the staggering vocal and stylistic mastery for such a young singer. This "growl" (the soufflé sang), this rubato, this impressive vocal technique, Cécile uses it with a disarming smile and simplicity. Some of the titles were also engraved in concert conditions in the Mecca of Jazz, the Village Vanguard of New York, which does not fail to astound as the interpretation of Cécile and the quality of the recording are sparkling.
