After the slap of the first opus released in 2018, filmmaker John Krasinski returns to the script and behind the camera to stage Sans un bruit 2. Still worn by Emily Blunt, the film takes place directly after the events of the first film. On the casting side, the talented Cillian Murphy joins the ranks of this sequel.
Sans un bruit 2: an effective sequel
After the slap of the first film, and the surprise of the concept erased, difficult to offer a sequel that lives up to expectations. And yet, John Krasinski succeeds with flying colors. The writer / director signs a powerful, interesting sequel, which manages to renew the concept of the first opus, without falling into the easy. Already, he is taking the price of placing his plot directly after the events of the first film. Here, no ellipse, no good in time, the story continues where it left off. As if every minute, every second in this post-apocalyptic universe was hell. Where every moment is a terrible survival, where survival is a foolproof difficulty. Sans un bruit 2 also owes a lot to its opening sequence, simply mind-blowing. John Krasinski returns to his roots, at the beginning of the disaster. The opportunity for him to stage himself for an introduction of rare power. Through a staging of incredible precision, with meticulously calculated rhythm, he tells the first encounter between humans and extraterrestrials. The opportunity for spectators to learn a little more about the origins of these mysterious creatures with overdeveloped hearing. A scene that has been talked about a lot, but that has not usurped its reputation, as it is a lesson in thoughtful entertainment.
Less surprising but still impactful
Obviously, this second opus does not reach the slap of the first film. The fault, it is understood, to the effect of surprise disappeared. Without a Noise is a concept movie, and it's always very complicated to offer sequels to concept movies. However, even if the spectators no longer have the element of surprise, and are in familiar territory, John Krasinski does not demerit. He even signs a sequel that clearly has nothing to be ashamed of as it is a lesson in rhythm and staging. The filmmaker reminds us that blockbuster and auteur cinema can get along, and even complement each other. He proves that entertainment still has a very bright future ahead of him, and that he can renovate himself within himself. Sans un bruit 2 offers staging of impressive precision. The play on sound and silences is still impactful. John Krasinski knows when to shut up and when to make noise. The carnage sequences, whether in the opening scene or on the island, are recklessly brutal. And we almost wish we had seen more. Cillian Murphy proves once again that he is an extremely talented actor, as he brings a new breath to the film. The patched up father/daughter relationship works well, despite its lack of originality. Finally, the last scene, carried by the superb music of Marco Beltrami, is of a crazy power. It reminds us that the new generation has the keys to its future, that it is the answer, and will have to build a better world than that of its ancestors, tired, wounded, who now live in their shadow. And even if the subject is sometimes too classic, the execution borders on perfection. Sans un bruit 2 finally offers a foolproof rhythm, and its 1h40 passes at a crazy speed. Time for a whisper, and here we are back in the real world, yet so noisy… https://youtu.be/-CyFhfIhkpo
