The famous actress Whoopi Goldberg lends her voice for the environment in a touching short film. The objective is to pay tribute to our planet, unfortunately too often neglected.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1972. It was created on the occasion of the opening of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. Every year, it is celebrated on June 5. The objective is, of course, to share the values of respect for the environment, but not only. It is also a question of making people aware, especially among the youngest, of the importance of our planet Earth. If we don't act and take care of it, we destroy it. And with this destruction, the disappearance of thousands of species is at stake. This is not the only disastrous consequence that could take place in the coming years. Unless we all decide to become active, at our own level, in ecology! This is what this short film tries to make us understand. elena mozhvilo eA32JIBsSu8 unsplash scaled Whoopi Goldberg commits to World Environment Day

A poignant animated film

The three-minute animation was produced by the environmental social movement Extinction Rebellion (more commonly known as XR). It aims to urge governments to act to "avoid tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss and the risk of social and ecological collapse." Joaquin Phoenix , the vegan and committed actor, starred in a short film for the association last February. It is Whoopi Goldberg's turn to lend her voice and express herself on the subject of the environment. The animation is a short film called The Gigantic Change. It's 2050 and we're being shown how the people of planet Earth have come together to save the world from the climate crisis. The year 2050 was not chosen by chance. This is the date on which many countries, including France, have committed to achieving zero carbon. The short film's director, George Lewin, explained that Goldberg, a former UNICEF ambassador, was chosen to lend her voice because she would have an " iconic voice " that could "bring a perfect sense of gravity to the performance". He also says:

"Moreover, she is outspoken on environmental issues and had the potential to inspire many of her supporters to take action […] So we sent the script to her agent, and she came back quickly and said, "I'm up for it." We couldn't believe it."

A successful animation, with a consequent impact. A glimmer of hope is released in this short film, and it feels good!
