From 1 to 4 July 2018, 2.7 million spectators flocked to cinemas for the Fête du Cinéma. A score in sharp decline compared to the previous edition. The main cause: the hot weather and the Football World Cup.
The 34th edition of the Fête du Cinéma ended on Wednesday, July 4, 2018. If 3.2 million spectators took part in 2017, it failed to match the score this year. According to a statement from the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF), it has gathered only 2.7 million followers. This is 16% less than the previous edition.
Venues deserted due to the World Cup
Created in 1985 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, the Fête du Cinéma is a particularly eagerly awaited period for all film lovers wishing to take advantage of ultra-reduced rates. During these four days of surprises, they were able to appreciate the new films released in late June and early July. They also had the opportunity to (re)discover many classics offered by cinemas for the occasion. If as many spectators as last year were expected, the balance of attendance is quite disappointing.
"The impact of the very hot weather, especially on Sunday, and very dense news, mainly because of the Football World Cup, explain these results," say the organizers.
While the Blues are definitely in the final (1 – 0 for the France in the semi-final against Belgium), the spectators have deserted the rooms since the beginning of the competition. And the Fête du Cinéma, from 1 to 4 July, could not change anything.
The Incredibles 2 resists the Blues
Sunday, July 1, with a total of 492,000 spectators gathered in theaters, represents a sharp drop of 41% compared to 2017. If Monday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 3 recorded a decrease of 30%, the last day of celebration, this Wednesday, July 4, saw an increase of 28%. This is explained by the renewal of the offer and the success of the new releases, a special mention to the film The Incredibles 2 which, 14 years after its first opus, is one of the only ones to have managed to stand up to the team of France.
While waiting for the final which will take place this Sunday, do not forget the cinema! To encourage this, Just Focus offers you its Top 5 movies to see during this World Cup period.
