On June 9, 2017, the 19th edition of the Très Court International Film Festival will begin in simultaneous screening in different places around the world. JustFocus had the chance to see part of this year's selection before the official start and echoes it!

From June 9 to 18, more than 90 cities in 28 different countries will be set to the same time zone of the cinema! For this annual event, the program of the new edition of the Très Court Film Festival is enticing. In total, 150 selected films, 2 competitions ("International" and "Women's Words"), 5 thematic programs ("Differences", "Animation", "Family", "Music'n'Dance" and "Trash & Glam"), local selections, 2 juries and 1 public vote for 6 prizes! The festival, which is already eighteen years old, attracted 30,000 spectators around the world last year (including 10,000 in France).

The principle: 4 minutes to convince

The principle is bold. In this festival, it is not short films that are in the spotlight but very short films. Four minutes maximum to the directors of these works (because yes it is indeed films in their own right), to be impactful, convincing, effective, funny or moving. And the bet is successful.

The programming of this new edition hits the mark and manages to transport us far in such a short time. Mixing animation and real images, the selection of the official international competition brings together some forty films from five continents, for works all as different as each other, but nevertheless linked for many by a desire to be the reflection of their time.

A festival in tune with the times

The works proposed at the festival are often the mirror of their time. The themes addressed are in perpetual connection with current events and trends. Thus, subjects such as social networks, different visions of the future, generational conflicts, the absurdity of the world, or the desire for evolution of the feminine condition are all subjects that will be found on the screen. The tone of approach also varies, as do the desired atmospheres and results. Dramas, comedies, tragedies, ironic, offbeat films, love stories or bloody stories, none of what shapes our world is excluded from the programming.

We can also only welcome the presence of a competition category "Women's Words". Depicting strong and complex female characters, this selection shows another facet of femininity and highlights the work of female directors, still underrepresented in comparison with their male peers, as well as directors who take up these subjects.

A cosmopolitan jury

In France, the international competition will have a renowned jury, chaired by Nicolas Boukhrief, French screenwriter, producer and director. At his side accompany him Agnès Soral (actress), Karim Debbache (webcroniqueur), Valérie Leroy (director and actress), Yann Olejarz (programmer), Laura Terrazas (journalist) and Thomas Imbert (journalist). The jurors will have the difficult task of deciding between his works in (very) short format. This is not easy given the variety and talent of the selected films!

The results of the official international competition and that of Paroles de femmes will be announced respectively on 16 and 18 June, following the screening of the films of the two selections at the Forum des Images. For the lucky winners, no less than six prizes are to be shared. For the international competition, five awards rub shoulders: the Grand Prix, supreme award, the Prize for Originality, Animation, Public and the Eye of Links Prize – Canal +. The Paroles de Femmes competition will award a prize worth 1,000 euros.
