We couldn't believe it anymore. Ten years after the release of Welcome to Zombieland, a sequel should see the light of day. Screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese hope to air Zombieland 2 in early October 2019, on the same release date as the first film to mark the comedy's tenth anniversary.
They had been among the first to integrate zombies into an action/adventure movie. Released in 2009, Welcome to Zombieland (Zombieland in original version) was a great success, not really anticipated by the writers. The film sold $25 million in movie tickets during its first week of release in the United States. In France, the comedy attracted 275,000 spectators. Since 2009, Wernick and Reese have been trying to expand the universe of Welcome to Zombieland. In 2013, the two men wrote the pilot for a series about Zombieland that Amazon declined. The writers subsequently ran out of time. They were indeed at work since they co-signed the scripts of Deadpool 1 and 2. They also wrote a sequel to G.I. Joe and worked on the script for Life. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese were finally able to return to Zombieland in late 2016.
The whole team is back in service
The two writers are not the only ones who have been busy. The cast from the first film will all be present for Welcome to Zombieland 2. It was not easy. Since 2009, the four actors have had a small success. Woody Harrelson (Tallahassee) has starred in 24 films since, including four Hunger Games, two Elusive, Planet of the Apes: Supremacy, Three Billboards: Panels of Vengeance. He will also star in Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Highwaymen. Jesse Eisenberg (Columbus) has also chained blockbusters with The Social Network, Elusive 1 and 2, Batman v Superman and Justice League. Emma Stone (Wichita) exploded with La La Land. She also starred in The Amazing Spiderman, The Color of Feelings and Birdman. As for Abigail Breslin (Little Rock), she starred in Janie Jones, Happy New Year, The Ender Strategy and A Summer at Osage County.
Director Ruben Fleischer is the only one who has not indicated whether or not he will participate in Zombieland 2. The two writers explained that they have information that they cannot reveal at this time, but that "Zombieland fans who are waiting for a sequel could see their dream come true very, very soon."
