Thursday, June 14, 2018. American director Brad Bird, and producers Nicole Grindle and John Walker were in Paris to participate in a press conference. The purpose of this meeting? Promote their film, The Incredibles 2, for its upcoming release!
It's been 14 (very) long years now that we have been wisely waiting for the return of the Indestructible family on the big screen. Suffice to say that the closer the release date of the second film, the more excitement is felt… And for having had the chance to see it Exclusively, we can tell you that the wait was worth it!
But still, we're not here to criticize it (not yet). Today, we're just going to give you a first glimpse of the film, trying not to tell you too much, and make you want to see it even more!
A superhero movie, but not only…
Is it really necessary to recall the theme of the films The Incredibles ? Faced with all the turmoil generated by the release of the new feature film, we do not see who could have never heard of the history of this extraordinary family! And this, despite the countless number of films featuring characters with superpowers…
However, you should know that for Brad Bird, this flowering of superhero movies has somewhat dampened his enthusiasm during the preparation ofIncredibles 2! (This could partly explain the 14 years of waiting…) The director explained: "Animated films are worked on over several years. At the time we started, I already felt that there were too many superhero movies. And we were going to arrive shortly after everyone else, when people would be tired of all this… I must admit that it bothered me a little. Say… for an hour! And then I realized that the reason I was interested in this idea in the first place was really in the perspective of using this notion of superhero in a family context. »
And by evoking the family aspect of the film, it put its finger on a major problem: that of the place of the family in The Incredibles 2. If it was already part of the first film, this theme will be all the more present in this second part. "It was a real challenge to find the balance between the family dynamic and the superhero side. But I think that's what makes the film dynamic and makes it a fun cinematic experience. An idea that producer John Walker fully supports:
"What we really needed was to quickly get back to normality when we went into the superhero side and, conversely, quickly get back to superheroes when we looked at normality. So the right balance between those two aspects is really what makes it an amazing movie! »
Characters
As we will have understood, The Incredibles 2 promises intense findswith the Parr family. And if everyone is happy to reconnect with Bob, Helen, Violet, Arrow and Jack-Jack, there is another type of character that makes us tremble with impatience … A clue? We love to hate them!
Yes, the villains also have an important role in this kind of feature film… In this sequel, we will finally discover who is this bizarre mole who had made a sensational entrance during the finale of The Incredibles. But we will also meet a new villain, the Hypnotist. And the latter carries a very particular message: that of addiction to new technologies and screens. "For me, the best villains are those who have an engaged opinion. And this point of view that they have, must make sense even if what they do is wrong, " says Brad Bird. "That's what makes them much more credible. »
So, it would be easy to talk for hours about our favorite characters… Nevertheless, there is one last point that must be mentioned regarding the appearances in this second film.
Lately, you may have heard rumors about a possible cameo with singer Usher ? Let us tell you they were founded! And to the question: why such an unexpected collaboration? Brad Bird replied with humor: "He kept contacting us! He's a big fan of The Incredibles. He really wanted to be in it, except we didn't really have a role to give him. But we thought of a little thing. He was offered and he was very happy. We were surprised because he was very involved from a creative point of view! It was he who had the idea of how his appearance unfolded."
The making of the film
Regarding the making of the feature film, Brad Bird admits to having been inspired by the films of his childhood : "At that time, superhero films were not really well done… So for The Incredibles, I was much more inspired by spy movies, because that's where there were the real villains."
However, during the conception of The Incredibles 2, the American director had to face a major challenge: the expectations of his audience following the success of the first!
"Every time a movie is really appreciated, there's this weird thing that happens… You know, I really try not to pay attention to the internet and what's being said on it, but sometimes I can't help it. And I notice then that there are always people to say "I really liked the first film, you don't have to disappoint me for the second!".I have to say that this kind of behavior really doesn't encourage creativity… In fact, the opposite is true; As a director, we will be more likely to think that if something worked well in the first film, then we will have to put it back in the next. Personally, I try to take a certain distance from it and ask myself what I would like to see on the screen! »
And as the end of the conference approaches, THE question that everyone (and even you) have been waiting for the verdict is finally asked: will there be, yes or no, a third film? Suffice to say that we felt slightly frustrated when we heard John Walker's answer… "We don't know… We must already launch the second one before considering this option! But Brad Bird still managed to get us a laugh by replying with humor: "It's like going into a maternity ward and going to see a young mother, who has just spent 16 hours giving birth, to ask her when the next baby will be! ».
While waiting to know if we will ever see our favorite superhero family again, let's already enjoy the theatrical release, on July 4, of the long-awaited The Incredibles 2. And to wait before the fateful date, (re)discover the first trailer HERE, and the second RIGHT HERE!
