The Terminator saga has not stopped talking about it lately … but via contradictory statements. Thus, we are not surprised to see that the future of the franchise is more than uncertain as James Cameron seeks to recover the rights.
This is a real headache. Since the failure of Terminator Genisys, Paramount, the studio producing the film, has said it no longer wants to invest in the saga. The feature film had brought in "only" 441 million dollars, including 90 in the United States while the budget of the film was 155 million dollars, in other words insufficient revenue to revive the idea of a new film. Emilia Clarke, interpreter of Sarah Connor in this opus, had even announced that she would not resume the role. Similarly, Arnold Schwarzenegger no longer wants to return to his emblematic role of the T-800 that he had agreed to take over in 2015 for Genisys. However, James Cameron, the initiator of this great saga, is fighting to recover the rights of his baby, which he will obtain in 2019. He is preparing a new Terminator project in his corner, and is even willing to sponsor a possible reboot, or remake (he had also approached Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool)
Paramount, which still owns the rights, told the New York Daily News that all traces of the Terminator had been erased from the schedule. In contrast, David Ellison, head of Skydance (which co-produced with Paramount Terminator Genisys), told Collider:
"We've solved the future of the franchise and believe me, it's an incredibly bright future ahead. I think we're moving towards the continuity of what fans really wanted since Terminator 2. This year, we will be making an announcement regarding the franchise. We're very excited about it and we think it's the right direction."
Hollywood is the professional of remakes and reboots, so it is very likely that the Terminator universe will return to the screen, but surely without the participation of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
