During the release of the last Marvel Studios, Captain America: Civil War, we could see the appearance of new heroes coming to join the Avengers, the time of this internal struggle. One of them stands out, because if Ant-Man and Spider-Man have already had their own movie, Black Panther is brand new and mysterious for the uninitiated. But even for them, it seems obvious during the post-credits bonuses, trademark of Marvel movies, that this character will play an important role in the near future.
The film Black Panther, announced for early 2018, takes a special place in the Marvel universe. Indeed, the eponymous character is the first black character to appear in comics in 1966, in the52nd episode of the Fantastic 4. It was born and introduced to the Marvel world by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.
In the United States of civic movements, where the struggle for the right to vote of the African-American community and more generally that for an end to segregation is raging, the gradual appearance of black secondary characters and then that of a colored superhero sounds like a step in the right direction.
Unlike Luke Cage, the second black superhero Marvel created in 1972, Black Panther / The Black Panther is not American, he comes from an imaginary country that would be located in Africa, named Wakanda. A territory populated by various tribes whose head of state is the only legitimate one to wear the costume of the black panther, symbol of his function. This country is presented as the only one in Africa that has never been colonized or invaded. And yet, it's not for lack of trying. Indeed, this country is the only one to have a rare mineral (invented for the comics): Vibranium (material that constitutes Captain America's "indestructible" shield). It is also thanks to this that the Wakandan State is the most technologically advanced country in the world. And this, while keeping ancestral rites and customs.
In Captain America: Civil War, the King of Wakanda T'Chaka is present at an assembly in Vienna, where the United Nations must ratify the Sokovia Accords (text which states that henceforth, the Avengers will no longer be a private organization and will operate under the control of a United Nations committee and only when this committee deems it necessary). During this meeting, a bomb explodes and kills the king. His son, Prince T'Challa, played by the young and talented Chadwick Boseman, succeeds him and thus becomes the new Black Panther.
The end of the film leaves us in suspense with many questions: What will be the place of the black panther in the group of avengers? In the Marvel Universe? And finally, what will be the theme of the film dedicated to him?
The rest of the cast was announced by Kevin Feige: Lupita Nyong'o will be Nakia from Dora Milaje and Michael B. Jordan will be Erik Killmonger, the villain of the film. Ryan Coogler added that filming would begin in January 2017.
But whatever happens, we hope that this new superhero will live up to his counterparts and the comics.
