NTM, the rap group from Seine saint-Denis, will have the right to his biopic. It will be directed by Audrey Estrougo. In this film, we will follow the beginnings of the band in 1988 until their first concert at the Zenith in 1992.
NTM : Spokesperson for the street
The NTM supremes are true pioneers of French rap. Present since the late 80s, Joey Starr and Kool Shen quickly became spokespeople for French youth. Passionate about Hip-Hop culture, the two friends have experienced all branches of the field: Smurf, Breakdance, graffiti … Hip-Hop has thus become a powerful means of expression for suburban youth. However, it is rap that will reveal them. Indeed, in a context of police violence and social inequalities, they were able to stand out for their outspokenness and audacity, perfectly transcribed in their very committed texts. The band name: NTM for "nique ta mère" highlights the raw and reckless side of the duo. They have a lot of classics in their discography: La fever, Paris sous les bombes, Ma benz… Musical successes that will propel them to the Pantheon of rap. The film will review the creation of the group and will end with their mythical first concert at the Zenith in 1992. This concert sounds like a consecration for the NTM, because they had released their first album Authentik a year before and the record has sold more than 100,000 copies. In addition, it is the first rap group to sell out at the Zenith. That's why this event will be honored in the film.
First time for rap
They are among the few French rappers to see their story adapted on the big screen. Indeed, even if rap is now the most listened to music in France, the main concerned do not really have a "tribute" to them. Across the Atlantic, it's totally different. The filmmakers have understood the stakes and the money that rap and rappers can generate. That's why a lot of films about these artists have emerged. We can obviously mention the films about Tupac and Biggie, but also the very good N.W.A: Straight Outta Compton, released in 2015. Indeed, the film returns to the creation and setbacks of the NWA group. The most dangerous group in rap. It included Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre in its ranks. It will therefore be necessary to wait until 2021, to see a real adaptation of the pioneers of rap, those who allowed this movement to move forward. Director Audrey Estrougo will have the difficult task of transcribing the duo's story as well as possible. On the actor side, it is Theo Christine and Sandor Funtek who will play respectively Joey Starr and Kool Shen. In addition, they have already been validated by the rappers themselves. They also said: "We met Theo and Sandor, they are super motivated and hardworking!" Ultimately, the film Supremes promises to be interesting and rich in content. The NTM group has had many moments of glory but also many lows. Especially with the justice or disagreements that led to the temporary separation of the group. It should be noted that filming will begin in 2021. Until then, take the time to immerse yourself in the excellent discography of NTMs.
