Steven Spielberg will cross paths with conquistador Cortés in a new Amazon Prime production. A mini-series focused on the meeting between Cortés and the Aztec emperor Moctezuma.
The American director decided to trust Amazon Prime. Still too little known in France, the platform counted among the largest across the Atlantic, challenging the giant Netflix. Based on historical facts, this mini-series will chronicle the life of Hernán Cortés, Spanish conquistador. Placed under the aegis of Charles V, King of Castile, it overthrew the powerful Aztec Empire in the 16th century. With a few thousand men and a shrewd sense of politics, Cortés managed to conquer what Mexico is today.
Javier Bardem as a conquistador for Spielberg
The actor will indeed lend his features to embody Cortés. Oscar-winning for his role in No Country For Old Men in 2008, he said:
"It is a privilege to tell this epic, filled with drama and conflict in such a historical spectacle that stages the clash between two civilizations far apart at their peak. The best and worst of human nature have taken shape, in all their brilliance as well as in their darkness. No actor can dream better than to participate in such an exceptional project, for which I have been passionate for years."
After Escobar, in which he will play the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar with his girlfriend Penelope Cruz, he seems delighted to be able to participate in such a project. And there's a lot to it. Cortés' script was written in the '60s by screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. And while it was to be adapted into a feature film, it is Steve Zaillan, who had already worked on Schindler 's List in 1993 with Steven Spielberg, who will edit the script.
Amazon Prime is not at its first attempt in production
Just as Netflix can do with its renowned series (Stranger Things, Orange Is The New Black …), Amazon Prime also invests several billion dollars in the production of content. It is the Transparent series that has propelled the video service to the rank of legitimate platform. She has since won many prestigious awards (Emmys, Golden Globes…) with series like Mozart In The Jungle or The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel.
While waiting for this already promising series, Steven Spielberg's new film, Ready Player One, has just been released in theaters. You can find our review by clicking here.
