Alden Ehrenreich, who played Han Solo as a young man, recently indicated that he would like to return to the Star Wars universe, under certain conditions. If this is understandable, we can nevertheless ask ourselves a question… Can Solo – A Star Wars Story really have a sequel?
A humiliating failure for Lucasfilm
Solo – A Star Wars Story was a resounding failure for Lucasfilm… For the first time, a Star Wars film was in deficit at the box office. Not to mention the criticism that has not been kind. Still, Solo wasn't that catastrophic. Admittedly, the film lacks grandiose. Admittedly, Han's character has been watered down. But to consider the film a purge would be in bad faith. Because this one is full of qualities. By the way, we ourselves enjoyed this film about Han Solo at JustFocus. Its failure does not seem to be due only to the intrinsic qualities of the film. Indeed, we have to put things in context. Solo – A Star Wars Story was released in May 2018… Just five months after the media mess that Star Wars 8 – The Last Jedi spawned. Fans were still in the middle of an open war about this episode. And those disappointed with Rian Johnson 's film were quick to make Lucasfilm pay by not going to see this spin-off. In addition, despite a solid fan-base for Han Solo, it must be admitted that this character is not the one who arouses the most curiosity about his origins. Finally, releasing a Star Wars movie five months after the previous one was a big mistake! Indeed, since 1977, we are used to waiting between two Star Wars films. So releasing a movie when fans hadn't yet digested the previous one was a risky bet… A bet that Lucasfilm has obviously lost. We are not at Marvel but at Star Wars. Fans demand quality before quantity. The result is a historic failure for the production company. Yet the question remains: could Solo 2 see the light of day?
Disney+: the savior of Solo – A Star Wars Story ?
For those who hope to see a Solo 2 at the cinema…. Forget it! Barring a miracle, we won't see the sequel to a loss-making film released in cinemas. However, a sequel could still see the light of day in a different format. And who else but Disney+ to get Lucasfilm's lame duck? After all, a movie, a live action series or even an animated series on the SVOD platform could easily serve as a sequel. Many questions remained unanswered and deserve further development. Where did Qi'ra go? Will she be trained to master the force? What does Darth Maul foresee? How will Han fare with his first missions on Tatooine? Will Lando try to retrieve the Falcon? There are a myriad of stories to exploit and it would be a shame if all this remained unresolved… Disney + seems to be the best compromise to give an end to this story. Recall in passing that Solo – A Star Wars Story was initially thought to be the first part of a trilogy, if we believe the words of its main actor. In short! There is still plenty to do.
