The Children's Brain is a documentary by Stéphanie Brillant whose theatrical release on May 25 makes it possible to challenge a certain number of clichés and aprioris on the brain capacities of children according to their ethnic or social origin.
Children's brains, an almost infinite potential
Faced with contradictory theories and a school system that is running out of steam, Stéphanie Brillant went to interview the greatest specialists in neuroscience and development sciences from major American universities. These renowned scientists have demonstrated the extreme plasticity of the brains of newborns. For them, no genetic or environmental predestination, but the need for interactions. Thus, between birth and the first birthday, the brain of a child goes from 400 g to 1 kg. This is one of the greatest cerebral profusion with adolescence.
Specialists have also shown that even at a very young age, children are much more aware and understand things quite finely than what is usually thought.
Throughout childhood and adolescence, the brain is boiling and is capable of great feats as long as children are well guided.
Original educational methods
This is where innovative educational methods come into play. Stéphanie Brillant has visited innovative schools. Here the teachings are adapted to the rhythm of the children, offering them varied, fun and positive activities. The goal is to enhance strengths while reinforcing achievements where there are weaknesses. Each notion is explained and teaching is based on practice and experimentation.
A committed documentary
The examples chosen and the speakers show that with adapted and stimulating teaching, but also interactions with one's family and peers, children, even the most disadvantaged, can undertake and achieve great things. This film shows that another education is possible if we give it the means. There is no fatalism and education is the best way to get children from the less well-off social classes out of their situation and help them reach their full potential.
The film The Children's Brain is one of the good surprises and makes you smile. It should be recommended to all parents and educators as it is full of interesting ideas to guide children without falling into the faults of the child-king. We note, however, that there are very few counterpoints and that we could accuse the film of angelism.
