After a trilogy containing ups and downs, Donnie Yen is back in the shoes of Ip Man for a fourth and final adventure. Guilty pleasure, extra part or perfect conclusion? This is what we will see in these lines. We had left the master of Wing Chun on a third part, unfortunately below the 2 previous episodes. With anyway, it is true, as the main asset an impressive fight between Ip Man and the character of Mike Tyson. So this fourth opus, announced as the conclusion of the story of Bruce Lee's Master, had to restore the image of the franchise. We always follow the Master going to the United States for the first time. Her goal is to find the best possible school for her son.
A rather disappointing conclusion?
Finally, we come out with a film that still does not equal Ip Man first name. However, the film offers very beautiful choreographies. That's why it all depends on what you're looking for when you watch Wilson Yip's Ip Man adventures (yes because there are other Ip Man movies that have nothing to do with it). Is it only for fight scenes? Or a mixture of fighting and emotion at the same time? The first Ip Man in particular, managed to combine the two perfectly. For the rest, we have a Donnie Yen always as good and convincing as Grand Master of Wing Chun. Also, we finally see Bruce Lee actually at work in a fight scene in the alleys of San Francisco. And the newcomer, Scott Adkins impresses with his charisma and gives us a good performance, as a downright extreme military. And this, despite the very caricatured side that emerges all the same. Especially about an America that is too sure of itself and that crushes others. Finally, if you were expecting historical veracity, it's still not the right franchise. Since this fourth episode is no exception to the rule and really adapts to its sauce the story of the man behind these films. But, once again, Ip Man 4 only repeats like its predecessors these inaccuracies. Anyway, seeing a history lesson on screen to the decimal point, may not be the best thing to do for this type of movies. If you are a fan of the genre or the Ip Man franchise, you should necessarily have a good time, so beautiful are the fights and some scenes rather enjoyable. That's overall a good conclusion to this story. But, all the same, we have a feeling of déjà vu in the unfolding of the story vis-à-vis the previous films. Perhaps, the big weak point of the saga. Nevertheless, when cinemas reopen, Ip Man 4 is a small guilty pleasure that is better seen in theaters.
