After Murder Mystery and The Wrong Missy, Adam Sandler continues his collaboration with Netflix with Hubie Halloween, the comedy of the end of the year that smells like pumpkin. A film intended especially for followers of Adam Sandler, but also for froussards who are looking for a light Halloween movie to get in the mood of 31. In the mythical city of Salem, the simple Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) prepares the Halloween party. But Hubie is afraid of everything, and the favorite pastime of the people of Salem is to make fun of him. So when supernatural phenomena occur on the evening of the 31st, no one believes it and people disappear… Between burlesque and grotesque, Hubie Halloween follows the classic lines of gentle comedy, without any surprises. Enough to have a good time by disconnecting his brain, but without more pretension. Adam Sandler, the ghost of Hubie Halloween If you are looking for a bloody comedy and parody worthy of a Scary Movie, skip your turn since Hubie Halloween remains wise from start to finish. And if you're looking for characters with a developed background, skip your turn too: no character lives outside of their role that is always too well defined, like a Tommy (Noah Schnapp, who has grown up since Stranger Things), the nice boy who flirts with the high school girl of his dreams, or a Violet Valentine (Julie Bowen) who is just there to feed Hubie's hyper-phonic romance. In fact Hubie Halloween comes in a series of people just as inconsistent as each other, and is especially aimed at fans of Adam Sandler, since it could not go 3 minutes without him on the screen, or wandering souls of Netflix who seek to pass the time. The main character Hubie Dubois, played of course by Adam Sandler, not terrible mix between Forrest Gump and Inspector Gadget with his thermos soup to do everything, struggles to move; The amateur actor of comedies tries by all means to make his character endearing, between gags to the chain and emotional moments quickly ridiculed, but never manages to reach our empathy which is lost in the meanders of the fantastic and the romantic. Noah Schnapp, young teenager with a big heart Let's still give the film a denouement not necessarily expected and obvious, which will raise the level a few minutes before falling back into a happy ending written and not very credible. But finally, we can not deny that all the actors seem to really have fun, almost forgetting the viewer on the other side of the screen (even a Steve Buscemi that we are more used to seeing at Tarantino or the Coen brothers, or a Ben Stiller during a mini cameo). Hubie Halloween will be perfect for a light and jumpscare-free 31st party. Otherwise, prefer a good old-fashioned horror movie, like the classic and perfectly made Conjuring 2, or the disturbing and fascinating Grave. Enough to spend a Halloween for all tastes!
