365 DNI is a Polish drama film directed by Barbara Bialowas. It is available on the Netflix platform since June 9, 2020. Adapted from the first book of a trilogy written by author Blanka Lipinska, this film has been creating controversy for a few weeks on the web. And for good reason, the film is accused of promoting rape culture. Focus!

A tedious and poorly crafted work

"Massimo is a member of the Sicilian mafia and Laura is a sales manager in Poland. The latter does not suspect what awaits her during a trip to Sicily to save her couple: Massimo kidnaps her and gives her 365 days to fall in love with him.

Here is the script of the film. Classic and not very innovative, but in any case, the film does not claim to revolutionize the genre. And fortunately, for that matter. The script is almost non-existent and filled with cinematic inconsistencies, including false connections and scripting facilities that can disturb the viewer during viewing. To defend the work, the script is not really the focal point of the film, if there is one. Indeed, the scenario, the characters … Everything is cliché at will. The film essentially revolves around two characters: Massimo and Laura. For almost an hour, we see only the two of them on the screen. In short, 365 DNI is not a good movie. Unfortunately, this is not the only problem.

Characters too clichéd and problematic

Regarding the characters, we will focus on the two main ones: Massimo and Laura. Let's start with Laura. His role boils down to one thing: Massimo. The character has no background, it just serves to assert sexual without any logic. We almost want to go into the screen and reason with her a good shot. She lives only for her captor and this situation suits her perfectly. The director portrays the controversial image of women. Submissive, treated like a vulgar piece of meat, can testify to the insistent looks of all the men they meet. Then comes Massimo. He is a multimillionaire mafioso, rather handsome man, very temperamental (violent limit) and who does not like to be resisted. Despite all his advantages, Massimo is only a sexual predator ready to kidnap a woman in his home for 1 year so that she falls in love with him. Character traits far too glorified throughout the film through Laura's eyes. We are portrayed as a deranged, violent and megalomaniac man, but Laura stays by his side (spoiler: she marries him) because he pays her beautiful dresses and makes her discover the life of luxury. 365 2 Review "365 DNI" by Barbara Bialowas: the Netflix film that is controversial!

A film in the era of time?

Then… Where to start? 365 DNI or 365 Days openly surfs the wave of successful erotic films. Popularized by the saga 50 shades of Grey, the genre is experiencing a strong rise among young audiences. If 50 Shades of Grey can be disturbing, 365 Days goes much further by clearly glorifying rape, harassment and a slew of bad deeds that have plagued our society for too long now. Watching this film, we can say that the purpose of the work is to denounce these actions by explicitly showing the problem. Not! 365 Days is to be taken at first degree (unfortunately). As the minutes pass, we face a succession of discomforts. Already that the film is bad cinematically speaking, it gets rid of messages that we did not need. 365 3 e1593422548961 Review "365 DNI" by Barbara Bialowas: the Netflix film that is controversial! While many women nobly fight to assert gender equality, denounce harassment of which they may be victims or denounce the rapes and touching they have suffered (#Metoo, #Balancetonporc…), this film clearly spits in the face of the feminist cause. From the first meeting between the protagonists, we face a touch from Massimo. Indeed, after telling her that he was going to keep her for 365 days, he tells Laura that he will not touch her without her agreement… He said, his hand resting on her breast. This is one example among many in the film. We should consider explaining the term "consent" to our Italian friend.

A petition to remove the film

While the film was a hit in Poland on the day of its release and was number 1 in Netflix trends, the film is now the subject of a petition to have it removed from the platform. After Split, 365 DNI is on the verge of deletion. Indeed, the feminist collective Soeurcière sounded the alarm about the film by accusing it of promoting rape culture. It's amazing how much Netflix has to offer content like this. Indeed, the platform is known for its rather progressive and educational content for young people, for example the series 13 reasons why. However, all tastes are in nature and the film has risen to number 1 of trends. So it's a nice move from the American VOD platform. However, 365 DNI remains a work of fiction so to be taken with a certain hindsight. It will not mark the spirits cinematically speaking, but the film still managed to talk about him. The fact that it is a work written by a woman and also directed by a woman seems to show that some women can identify with these kinds of stories and fantasize about the character that Massimo embodies.
