Ready Player One: from fiction to reality with the Metavers

If you live on our planet, you couldn't escape the news of the year: Facebook is changing its name for the first time since its inception. The company then became the Meta Group. Why? Because Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, wants renewal for his company and projects himself into the future. Meta wants to be visionary and create a parallel world in the field of video games. A future that will surely remind you of a well-known movie: Ready Player One. This Steven Spielberg film is better placed than us to explain what Meta is.   

Ready Player One, a movie that becomes reality

Released in cinemas on March 28, 2018, Ready Player One is a book by Ernest Cline, published in 2011. It's a science fiction movie. What's it about? From the transition from the real world to a virtual world. In 2045, civilization looks more like a post-apocalyptic era, than our current society. A loophole has been created to find comfort: OASIS. You can enter it with a virtual reality mask. A fictional world, where it is possible to build a new life, created by James Halliday. When the latter dies, a race for Easter Eggs is launched in the virtual universe. If you're lucky enough to be the first to find this mystery egg, you can touch James Halliday's legacy, his fortune and OASIS. This jewel of pop culture, offered by Spielberg, announces what our future can be. In addition to the almost extinct society of the film, OASIS shows that a new universe can be created in a society such as ours, virtual reality headsets being already present at that time.

Zuckerberg's challenge

The Metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg wants to create looks exactly like the OASIS of Ready Player One. Facebook announces it as the future of the internet. Like this virtual universe invented in the film, we will find ourselves in a 3D world, with avatars to represent us. Our avatars will then be able to live a new life: go to work, have a drink in a bar, meet people. It would even be possible to have a currency specific to this new world. It would be like having a second life. The Metaverse presents itself as a video game that could revolutionize the world of the internet. A new version of teams, using this principle of Metaverse, is announced for 2022. You can then have your own avatar on the work platform, and have a more interesting interaction on paper. You will be able to see your avatar in a room interacting with another avatar during a presentation for example. The founder of Facebook then embarks on a new challenge to conquer a whole new world.

Sources of inspiration

Ready Player One isn't the first movie about an immersive virtual world. You can find in films like The Matrix, by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, or Inception by Christopher Nolan, worlds different from their reality. Ready Player One is not the first film where you can find antagonists propelled into a parallel universe. Only, Spielberg's science fiction is, for now, the first to come closest to what the Meta group wants to develop in the future.
