After the dazzling success of Frozen 2 and En Avant Disney animation studios are back very strong with a new animation: Raya and the last dragon. Originally scheduled for October 2020, the release date of Raya and the Last Dragon has been pushed back to March 2021.
Raya and the Last Dragon: But what is it?
Directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, the eponymous character, Raya the Lonely Warrior, will lead a quest to save the world from an evil force that has been raging for five long centuries. This force divided the kingdom into several peoples and led the dragons to their downfall. In the past, dragons and men lived in harmony and peace reigned. Unfortunately, to protect men from this evil force, dragons sacrificed themselves. But in reality, a dragon still lives. Raya and her companion Tuk Tuk will therefore embark on a search for him with the sole aim of saving his family from the terrible threat that has hung over their heads for five centuries. But above all, to bring peace and unity between the peoples who once lived in harmony.
Feminism and representation
Social demands inevitably influence pop culture and even more particularly the world of cinema and animation. And that, Disney has understood well. Princesses have given way to heroines. Princes charming, on the other hand, are no longer the key to outcomes. The female protagonists now fight alone for their own destinies, which is a huge step in the emancipation of Disney heroines but especially in the example given to children. Elsa and Anna (Frozen), Mérida (Rebel), Moana (Vaiana) and now Raya are all heroines belonging to the new generation of "princesses", which helps little girls to become aware from an early age, about the place of women in our society. Disney's effort to represent and diversify is obviously appreciable. Raya is a heroine who comes from Southeast Asia, she adds to the list, which grows from year to year, of racialized female protagonists: Jasmine, Mulan, Tiana (The Princess and the Frog) and Moana. All little girls and boys need to be able to identify themselves when watching animation, and Disney crews are working on themselves to make that possible. Raya and the Last Dragon promises a rich story with secondary characters all as interesting as each other. The graphics look, as usual from Disney, extraordinary and incredibly colorful. All that remains is to wait for the soundtrack to know which songs, young and old, will sing in heart until the end of 2021! So open your calendars and make a note: Raya and the Last Dragon will be released in theaters on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.
