Nicolas Cage is still making his own. The chameleon actor who plays as much in Hollywood blockbusters as in small auteur films, will be this Wednesday, October 27, on the poster of Pig. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, who signs here his first feature film, Pig tells the fate of Rob, a truffle hunter who lives as a hermit in the forest. With a pitch like this, Pig could be interpreted as a new reinterpretation of the concept of John Wick, with a single man, who will do everything to take revenge for the disappearance of his animal. But Pig offers a very different treatment. Michael Sarnoski moves away from action films to sign a small throbbing and silent film carried by a touching human adventure. The filmmaker offers a moving and original scenario, about a lonely man, who has isolated himself from society, and who is forced to return to find his sow. 
The work owes much to the presence of Nicolas Cage. A chameleon actor, he moves away from his usual exuberant roles to sign a reserved, silent, taciturn performance, which suits him perfectly. The actor enters the skin of a man filled with animality, roughness, and loneliness, and offers one of his best performances since Joe. The actor infuses his character, whose past is unknown, with a hallucinating emotional charge.
A singular and intelligent drama
Pig is an intelligent look at the passage of time, on the evolution of a man in relation to his society, on his life choices. Without too much spoiler, Rob had a life before ending up as a hermit. And the film thus takes a moving look at the life before, on fame, on the choices, on the road taken, on the journey of a man during his life, and especially on his identity. Michael Sarnoski paints a portrait of a capitalist and materialistic society that Rob seeks to escape. The filmmaker also addresses the notions of ecology, return to nature, simple things, the return to the beginning. 
Pig thus tells the destiny of this man, who has thrown everything around, whether it is his own glory, like his loved ones, to return to a way of life dictated by simplicity. The story of Rob, who decides to leave the hustle and bustle of society to find the natural calm of the forest, nature, and the essence of life. Never pathos, Pig is a message against this modern society and its inhabitants. It's a message that all this is sometimes absurd, and that perhaps Rob's lifestyle should be preferred. Through this very wise and extremely touching character, Michael Sarnoski draws a deeply ecological film, without giving the impression of it. He directed a singular and very personal drama, which sometimes borrowed from the Coen brothers or Jim Jarmusch. Because above all, it is the heartbreaking story of a man who wants to find his sow.
