Released in 2015, Sicario is directed by Denis Villeneuve, one of the greatest directors currently employed by Hollywood (witness Blade Runner 2049 and its designation for the remake of Dune). Its sequel, Sicario – The Cartel War, is revealed in a new trailer.
Scheduled for June 27, 2018, Sicario – The Cartel War, once again features sicarius Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) and FBI agent with unscrupulous methods Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), in an ultra-violent adventure in the heart of Mexican cartels. Exit Denis Villeneuve (who is already busy at the moment) to make way for Stefano Sollima, noticed for his feature film ACAB – All Cops Are Bastards, or several episodes of the series Gomorra and Romanzo Criminale. Emily Blunt will also no longer be there, the film focusing this time on Benicio Del Toro (and his past remained very mysterious). However, we are eager to discover a sequel by Taylor Sheridan (successful writer and director: Sicario, Comancheria, Wind River…). Note that we find a little of the provisional title in the final choice: in original version it will be Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
Synopsis: Mexican cartels are reigning terror on the border between Mexico and the United States. Desperate to find a solution to this scourge, federal agent Matt Graver once again calls on the mysterious Alejandro to kidnap Isabela Reyes, the daughter of the baron of one of the largest active cartels. The goal? Start a fratricidal war between the various gangs and let them kill each other. But the situation degenerates and the girl becomes a risk that must be discarded. Faced with this odious decision by his colleagues, Alejandro comes to question everything he has been fighting for for years.
At a time when U.S.-Mexico relations are more tense than ever, this is a film that risks speaking without concession about the unspeakable abuses committed by American law enforcement. Especially since the trailer hints at a geopolitical theme in addition to inter-gang wars. It remains to be seen whether the treatment of this suite will be able to exploit its full potential.
Just wait until June 27 to discover Sicario – The Cartel War, which could well be the second part of a trilogy (the recurring use of Sicario in the title of films, followed by a variable suffix gives the impression). In the meantime, discover the trailer, as well as our review of the first opus and our return on the career of Denis Villeneuve.
