Presented at the Directors' Fortnight, a parallel selection of the Cannes Film Festival, Mercenary by young French filmmaker Sacha Wolff, will finally be released on DVD on February 6.
The director's first fiction tells the story of Soane, a young Wallisian, who against the will of her violent father, will go to play rugby in metropolitan France. Exploited and alone in this world he does not know, he will have to learn to become a man.
The film and its director already have several awards. Mercenary is the 2014 laureate of the Gan Foundation for Cinema, accompanying young authors in their debut in cinema. Sacha Wolff received the Valois Award for Best Director at the 2016 Angoulême Francophone Film Festival.
This epic was judged both raw and lyrical at Cannes in 2016. Soane himself is characterized by exceptional strength, but with innocent gentleness. Not far from Greek tragedy, the film has an aesthetic realism.
