On Friday evening, June 2, the new edition of the Mashup Film Festival opened in the prestigious Max Linder Panorama cinema. JustFocus was there and comes back for you on the evening!

From June 2 to 30, 2017, the Mashup Film Festival is back for its seventh edition. It was in the ninth arrondissement of Paris, at the Max Linder Panorama cinema, that the event began, with the program for the opening, a rather excited evening. But Paris is not unique to film festivals. If this is where it starts, the Festival des Mashups will then continue its journey through other destinations in France (Ile-de-France, Lille, Metz, Marseille, Strasbourg, Rennes, Toulouse, Poitiers, Le Mans), and even abroad. But before going into more detail about the opening night, a few details first about the festival…

What is the Mashup Film Festival?

Created in 2011, this festival aims to highlight and reveal the mashup, an artistic genre too little visible and not always well esteemed and understood. Drawing on images from existing films or videos, "mashupeur" directors combine them and assemble them with music, and create their own narrative, diverting and reinterpreting the original works. A true creative work at the crossroads of cinema and the internet, the art of the mashup brings together an armada of enthusiasts, some coming from traditional directing, others wishing to go there…

Within the festival, the goal is to present popular and mainstream mashup videos as well as other more elitist and demanding cinematographic creations. But the primary objective remains to dedicate to this innovative genre a festival entirely dedicated to it, something that did not exist before! The festival alternates between screenings, conferences and workshops.

"There are four new languages that are revolutionizing cinema today: Series, Transmedia, Virtual Reality and Mashup. The first enriches the characters, the second deploys the supports, the third widens the field of vision, and the fourth creates unusual marriages. Only the last one no longer has a festival in France. We want to give him one back.Julien Lahmi, festival director

A crazy opening night

For the beginning of the event that will last the whole month of June, things had been thought out thoroughly. At the entrance, disguised characters greeted the participants. From 20h officially opened the festival, after speeches tinged with humor of the hosts of the evening, the youtubeur Inthepanda and the journalist Philippe Guedj, as well as that of Julien Lahmi, director of the festival and director of mashups, wearing for the occasion a disguise at the crossroads between the universe of Charlie Chaplin and that of Star Wars.

The rest of the evening's program was varied and rich in color. In the first part, the screening of eight short films (Scarlett Johansson by Johanna Vaude, Captain America and the robots by Mozinor, Master of Suspense by Fabrice Mathieu, Hell's Club by Antonio Maria Da Silva, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, a Tribute, by Alex Gasulla, 300, trailer of Vinza, Uptight by Guillaume Delaperrière and Munchsferatu, by Julien Lahmi), followed by La Classe américain: Le grand détournement, by Michel Hazanavicius and Dominique Mézerette. Finally, to close the festivities, everything was followed by a concert (very original!) of the group "Addictive TV", mixing sound mixes and visual equivalences on the big screen.

For those who wish to relive even better the opening night, there is the possibility to discover the Facebook live of this moment, on the festival page.
