Johnny Depp is back (long-awaited!) in Brad Furman's City of Lies . The Hollywood actor plays the role of a detective trying to solve the tragic murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G occurred in 1997. Christopher Wallace, aka Notorious B.I.G, tragically murdered in 1997 in Los Angeles (only six months after Tupac), revolutionized rap history. After Notorious B.I.G, a biopic released in 2009, and a Netflix documentary released in February 2021, the rapper is again the main subject of a film. And it is in this film that Johnny Depp makes his comeback. The Hollywood actor shares the poster of City of Lies avec Forest Whitaker (Oscar winner for his role in The Last King of Scotland in 2007). This is Brad Furman 's new film (The Lincoln Defense, Infiltrator). In this feature film, we follow Russell Poole (1956 – 2015, played by Depp), a Los Angeles police detective who has been trying to solve the rapper's murder for twenty years. In his quest, he will be accompanied by journalist Jack Jackson (played by Whitaker) with whom he will team. They will try to understand why, more than two decades after the murder, the case has still not been solved and will try to bring some semblance of truth. Although fictional, the film is based on journalist Randall Sullivan's book, Pulitzer Prize-winning LAbyrinth, which is one of the first detailed investigations into the murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac. Thus, after several years of postponement of production due to the legal setbacks of the star of Pirates of the Caribbean, the release of the film in theaters is scheduled for March 19 and April 9 for VOD platforms.
