James Cameron, the director of Avatar, opened up about cinemas and blockbusters during an appearance on The Tonight Show. The question we all ask ourselves is whether cinema will also be among the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic? While the opening of theaters is scheduled for May 19 in France, James Cameron is worried and admits to praying for the good of the box office. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, the director explains that he does not attach importance to seeing his films surpassed by those of Marvel and in particular Avengers: Endgame, for the title of No. 1 of the world box office:
"Everyone is making a big deal out of this battle, but the truth is, we really need to just focus on getting back to the movies! Hopefully we can still have, in the years to come, movies like Avengers: Endgame, big Marvel movies or Avatar or others… Films capable of bringing in $1 billion or $2 billion in revenue. »
James Cameron even admits to praying that cinemas remain a viable way to watch films after the pandemic is over:
"Let's pray that cinemas are still around after this pandemic and after this shift to streaming. I have nothing against streaming. There's good writing and great streaming series, but let's remember that movie theaters are a sacred experience for all of us. Let's not forget to go back as soon as it is possible, safely."
It must be said that the filmmaker plays big! Indeed, he has been preparing a film project of titanic scale, for years, with Avatar 2 which should be released on December 16, 2022 in theaters, then Avatar 3 provisionally scheduled for December 22, 2023 and Avatar 4, set for December 18, 2026. And, if the sequels are successful, Disney will sign a check for Avatar 5. The director therefore has more than one reason to pray… As for us, cinephiles that we are, hope to be able to tread the carpet of our dear cinemas again on May 19.
